Looks like I will be going to law school in the fall of next year. I don't know where yet. I'm not from MS (GA), but I was hoping that someone could give me an idea of the local reputation of the College of Mississippi Law school in Jackson.

ITs Mississippi College. And it is a good law school. But, like Mottlet said, it is expensive as it is a private school.
The UM law school in Oxford is probably higher ranked than MC, and is less expensive since it is a public school.
But, being in Jackson has its advantages with respect to a large supply of local clerkship opportunities (good way to get experience while in school, and to make extra $$$).

I went to MC law school and it was a good experience and education for me. It is VERY expensive, but they give a lot of scholorships, which helped me out a lot. I disagree that Ole Miss is ranked any higher than MC as far as education or getting a job in MS. I actually think it is easier to get a job coming out of MC b/c you can clerk at these Jackson firms during the school year. However, if you intend to work in Georgia or somewhere other than MS, then Ole Miss is more well-known. If you need any additional information, PM me. Good luck to you!!

I'm there right now (at MC Law School) and yes if you're footing the bill it does get expensive (all private Law Schools are), but there are Scholarships available and you can earn one with a good academic performance your first year. I like the school a lot but it is by no means perfect, I'm not sure about your situation but I'm married and have twin 2 year olds and my wife would simply not move to Oxford (she's the one supporting making money right now so I couldn't complain too much). But, if you want to work in Mississippi it's a good a place as any to go to school, there are Alumni throughout the Southeast, but you will make most of the connections in the state where you attend law school. One of the advantages is that the faculty is a bit more conservative than at some of the higher profile law schools, so if you lean in that direction it may be a little more comfortable for that reason.
Bottom line on law school, grades grades grades...and network...if you do these you'll be OK wherever you go. If you have any questions feel free to shoot me a PM. You might find it interesting that over half of the 1L's (first year students) this year are from out of state, just FYI.
Oh, and Ducklord...you don't need a hard working Law Clerk in the top 15% of his class by any chance do you

I graduated from MC School of Law as well. I think it was/is a great school. I had several friends that were in law school at Ole Miss at the same time and I felt like I got a better education. A very big plus to MC is that it is in Jackson and clerkships are available to almost anyone who wants one. At Ole Miss if you are not in the top 25% of your class, jobs for students are alomost non-existent. If you have any questions feel free to contact me.
They have added great new class rooms and other amenities in the past couple of years. I toured it a month or so ago and it is very nice. I can't argue with the fact that it is VERY expensive, but thats what you get at a private school. They have to pay for those brand new facilities.

MC is a decent law school and it turns out plenty of good, capable lawyers. But it isn't as good as the Ole Miss law school. Sorry MC folks.
Check the US News rankings for the past 25 years or however long MC has been accredited. (Ole Miss is currently #97. MC is in the lowest tier of schools -- approximately # 140 to 180). Also compare the bar pass rates (which I would say reflects on the claim that you get a better education at MC) and the average LSAT scores.
Jackson firms are obviously more likely to hire MC students for clerkships during the school year. But the clerkships during the summer are what counts. I don't know about this year, but Ole Miss has always had higher employment at graduation numbers than MC did.

What he said ... Ole Miss is about 1/3 of what it cost to go to MC.
But, you have to go to Ole Miss

You can get a good education at ANY law school. Its up to YOU, really. I have attorneys working for me that went to MC that are top notch blue chip lawyers, so I know they do a good job.
MC made its living for a long time off kids with money who could not get into Ole Miss' law school. I don't think it is that way much anymore. I could never have justified the cost of MC since I was admitted to Ole Miss, and had scholarship money to boot.
At MC, I could have never drank beer and played racketball all day with Meeka/Dawg and all the other people on here who went to school with us but won't fess up to being lawyers.
And yes, if you don't go to class and study your rear off you will flunk out. One out of every three students does.
