Well, my hunting buddy and I will be hunting on Grenada Lake this weekend. We have never hunted it before, but we are desperate for some decent teal action. Down here in the Mobile Delta we got 4 BWT in 5 hunts. All we know about the lake is that it supposedly holds some ducks and it is big. We will be out all day Friday just looking around trying to get a feel for the place. Anyway, can someone please provide me with some tips and advice?? Where is the best place to launch from?? (long runs are bad, we have an 8hp "slow-devil") What general part of the lake should we go to in order to find teal?? Are there many permanent blinds set up?? (we dont have a boat blind) MANY thanks to all who reply!!

hunted grenada lake last weekend at bryant landing and saw 10 teal. good luck finding a boat ramp that has water, i would check the boat ramp at torrance landing, the lake should be about the right level to launch a boat at Torrance. hope you have better luck than I. I have a friend that rode his 4wheeler around Graysport about a week ago and said he saw 6 mallards and some woodies.

Grenada lake is at it's fall draw-down level--very low. We've been fishing it for about 2 weeks now and about the only place to put a boat in is at the levee. Most of the ramps up the lake are dry except for the ones that put directly into the river. The teal are pretty scarce there also, I figure most have already moved further south. Good luck

well man the post arent to positive so far, but I wont be discouraged , dont it always seem when everyone else is showing up at the dock empty handed and skunked, we have always got something to show????

Well, you're going about it the right way.......starting with scouting and trying to become familiar with a new place.
This business 'bout recieving 'tips' from folks that claim to hunt a certain area is perty risky........'never know how reliable the info is until you see for yourself.
I'll be honest with you........if I hunted Grenada Lake, I probably wouldn't tell you what legal shooting time is.....(or anything ELSE, for that matter)!
You're not likely to get any 'reliable' information from those few that really know what's going-on, there......'cause it only took'em one good 'yahoo' to figure out the less you say, the better off you are. ('Not saying you're a 'yahoo', mind you......but the next friendly guy that comes into THEIR territory, waggin' his tail, MIGHT be)
'Gonna be kinda hard to figure a new place out in a weekend, but the more you're out there......the more you'll learn. After all, that's why they call it 'hunting' instead of 'killin'.
If I see a fella out there everytime I go, keeps his distance and he just hasn't come-up with the winning combination, yet......I'm more inclined to help HIM, than I am the guy that just shows-up occasionally, and only speaks to you cause he wants to pump you for as much information he can get. 'Gotta respect the local folks.

Anatidae- I never expected anyone to give away their secret honey holes or anything. Hell, if I found a good spot, I would keep it near and dear to me. I am not asking for handouts-- I am no duck hunting newbie. I have experience on private rice fields in both MS and AR, but my only public hunting has been in the Mobile delta. I don't have a problem with what you're doing and I'm not categorizing anyone, necessarily. I don't care where a fellow waterfowler is from as long as he is considerate and knows the do's and don'ts when it comes to sharing the same space......and that's what you do when you hunt public land. If waterfowlers don't share a mutual respect, there's gonna be trouble.
My comments were just general observations that were intended to be helpful......not critical. Hunting on public land is a whole different ball game....and to be successful requires that you manage the usage of it, wisely.
Folks have good intentions and say they don't want anyone's honey-holes, but all it takes to find one is for folks to follow the 'shots'........obviously, the more shots you hear, the more stuff someone else is shootin' AT (so it may seem). Human nature compells folks to go find THAT 'spot' (particularly if they're not seeing anything to shoot AT, themselves), so they might have a chance to get there, the next day.
Now, that's not how I hunt......and may not be how YOU hunt, either.......but there's folks out there LIKE THAT, non-the-less, and they the ones that ruin it for the local folks. So forgive me if I sound a little defensive, but if you want to protect your hunting ground and don't want to see it turn into a circus....you have to be a little discreet.
I can tell you're not a newbie in the way you approached your quest for information......so don't take offense. Some of us are just a bit more 'protective' of what we can't replace.....and on public land, if you get over-run with folks that don't know their butt from a whole in the ground and they actually kill a duck, that day......you're gonna see TWICE as many there, tomorrow. That's just the way it works.
Some folks spill their guts to perfect strangers in hopes that they will appear to be 'in-the-know' about a place to go whack a few birds.......never realizing the damage it causes to a place by way of increased hunting pressure. When there gets to be more hunters than ducks, the ducks leave.
Like I said (which might not necessarily mean anything to ya) I think you're going about it the right way (that's complimentary).......and hope you have some luck finding birds. I wouldn't say that if I didn't admire (to some degree) the way you presented your querry. 'Ain't got nuttin' to do with where you're from, buddy.

Yeah, dont ever say anything about a place to hunt on public OR even private land for that matter on this forum or Anatidae will lecture. I had to learn that the same way you did. I think he enjoys trying to make people look bad when it comes to that topic.

I don't mind helping out a fellow duck hunter, cause I might be the next one asking for help. I would go to Graysport Crossing. Stop at the store where you turn left off of Hwy 8. It's right there on the left. Stop and ask for "B" James, if he's not there his son or some of the locals can probalby help you out. Problaby the hardest thing is to find where to put in. There are a lot of crappie fisherman that come by there that might tell you if they have seen ducks or not. Good luck. Ronnie NailI'm Retired, leave me alone

we were just asking for some" round-about" advice not asking for someone to guide us on a hunt!! I plan on hunting the area a good bit this year and my buddie that lives up there does too. so we were just hoping that someone might have something to say on the area, like theres some good spots on it ,or its been kinda slow this year NOT gps coordinates to there favorite hole!!!! thats just the way we do things down here, and in my experience it makes everything easyer when hunting a large area!!

Hey, I don't fault you for that.......and as I said, I'm not being critical.....just trying to provide (what I view as) some helpful insight from someone that's had a fair amount of experience hunting public land.
All I was pointing-out (and something you touched-on in your last comment) is folks might 'do' things differently than the way you 'do' things at home........and that you might do well to keep that in mind.
I'll give you an example: 'Ever been around a 'Yankee' that comes to the South for the first time.......and forgets to leave that damn 'take charge' attitude back home? 'Kinda gets on yo nerves, doesn't it? Almost to the point you kinda resent the intrusion, huh? But thank goodness they not ALL like that.....just most of'em I've come in contact with. 'You know the type.....'kinda like they grew-up in the military, or somethin'.
Now, the way we(us) 'Southerners' (us'ns) typically 'DO' things when we go to a new place, is keep quiet while we casually observe folks for awhile, then wait for the right moment to tactfully point-out that they're fulla more stuffin' than a 22 pound 'Butterball'.....then go-on about our business. That might not be the best way to gain their respect, but it might be the quickest way to get their attention. That's the first step. Chances are, they not gonna understand what you said anyway......and THAT alone, will torment the hell out of'em for uh while. Mission accomplished, right?
