Governor’s Cup May Replace Mayor’s Trophy

After a quarter-century the Mayor’s Trophy game appears to be off the 2007 baseball schedule. Instead a new ball game should be taking its place, as Mississippi State and Mississippi are expected be playing for the new Governor’s Cup this coming season.
The 2007 game would also be played in Trustmark Park in Pearl, on April 17. Tentative schedules previously published left the site for the annual, non-SEC event between the Diamond Dogs and Rebels tentative. Now updated slates indicate a change of venue for the first time since the extra, non-SEC game between the rivals began in 1981 at Jackson’s Smith-Wills Stadium.
Neither school nor anyone in the metro area have officially announced this change of game and venue as of yet.
The Diamond Dogs played for their first time at Trustmark Park last April, a year after the facility—home of the AA-affiliate of the Atlanta Braves—opened. Even before then there was speculation over the future of the Mayor’s Trophy game, sparked by opening of the up-to-date new facility. Also, the future of Smith-Wills Stadium itself is in doubt with proposals from promoters to replace the aging facility.
There had been informal talk that the traditional Mayor’s Trophy game might be played along with a second game between the Dogs and Rebs in the metro-area. That does not appear to be an option for 2007 because with the Governor’s Cup game the MSU schedule is at the NCAA limit of 56 games already.

As long as USM's security staff is not involved at the game, then I am all for inclusion of UM, MSU, and USM in a tourney. With that condition, Ron Polk might show up.
I don't like changing the name of the game or its location. Its obviously an MSU plot to change the positive mojo for the Rebs in this game.
