Panther Swamp Addition?

Postby tupe » Wed Sep 18, 2002 6:43 pm

Saw a report today that PSNWR just bought 640 acres within its boundries as new ground.
My question is... I used to hunt on what I thought was the last private ground within its boundries but it was 800 acres. So where is this 640 or is it my old camp and they held onto a quarter section, or is the figure a mis-print?
S.B. You got any info?

Thanks,
M.B.

Panther sucks anyhow, too many people in there w/ limited space. Great place to go if you like to hear the group next to you talking..

Yep, the one Tal is in. My familywas in it way back. I have not hunted there in years and had heard the crowds had gotten horrid. Just wondering if the feds finnaly got up to their buy out price. I just can't think of another piece of land that size within the refuge?

It sounds like they bought a whole section. Is there a full section available within the boundaries, or did they have to expand the property? From your description, it sounds like there is a full section left within the boundaries, or a full section nearby that is the right kind of terrain to complete a continuous type of land setting.

I haven't heard of this and am curious, Please advise.

That is what I am trying to find out. The track I used to belong to was 800acres but the notice said 640. The only other full section within the refuge I know of belonged to the school board and was leased by PSNWR but there wasn't much for ducks on it. It was cut up by the levees. I did hunt it back when we leased it but it was more miss than hit. After the USFWS got it they closed it to waterfowl hunting.

MB, you talking about the old Strickland camp? Thats the only block inside the refuge that I know other than the school's section near the channel. Could be a couple of places with access off River Road (not really inside but with limited access). A couple of years ago, Panther got some property across Hwy 49 close to Anderson's minnow ponds (at least that's who used to own them). By the way, I killed my first Canada goose while duck hunting on Skinner Anderson's place one year in the early 70's. Hardly ever saw geese back then.

Crow,
My word man its been a while since I ran across folks who knew the Stricklands and Skinner. Strickland's sold out back in the late 80's and the camp I belonged to was the only other holdout thatI knew of within the boundries. Our place was due east of Strickland's and a quarter section that ran across the pipeine from the southern edge of the section by the old Hawks Camp site.
The feds have been dying to get their hands on that place for years, but last time I knew of thatthey made an offer the members wouldn't sell.
Since you seem to be familiar it is the section thatincledes the main break of the Big Tupe and part of Fish Hole.

How is it that a GA boy knows the good folks from Strickland's, maybe we have run into each other before?

Oh, man, I would give my left leg to have that camp in there! Yeah, right on the pipeline, you have to get off the pipeline to stay off their property. East of where Deep Bayou goes under the pipeline. I always thought that looked like a nice place from the air.

i think the refuge just leased a school board section. not a fee title acquisition.

Hello crow, anderson minnow farms are still being used today Skinner got out of them but I think they are still being run by Jim Anderson. I was also trying to think where they would have been able to find that much private property, I know there is still some private land out there but I don't know if any are for sale. Good to hear from you crow. The season was pitful this year out on eagle bend.

MB, I've been trudging that ground for a long time. I know exactly where that property is. If you cross the new bridge on the pipeline, you run smack dab into it. I never thought it would be sold, though. My brother-in-law used to have the right-of-way maintenance contract for Southern Natural Gas and I used to help him mow that part in the summers when I was in college. I grew up in Yazoo City. Skinner's boy, Bill is a year older than me and we went to school together. I hunted Panther Swamp when Mr. Curran owned it. His daughter was a friend of mine and he let me hunt pretty much where I wanted...I have been way lost in those woods before! I hunted it hard for many years after the govt got it and had great hunts till it just got too crowded. Not too many places out that way I haven't left some tracks in. I graduated in '69 in Yazoo, so that tells you I'm a little long in the tooth.

GH22.... I've hunted Shipland...but was not that impressed...maybe I just caught it at a bad time... but as far as Anderson Tully...if you are talking about the tract just above Shipland.... It has gone to private leases now...I know because I was in one there last year.... the 974 acres between Hwy 1 and the levee...... they just thinned the timber out... they have a levee inside the 974 with control structures.... plenty of water and habitat, including acorns... but the ducks where null and void last year...with the exception of woodies..... in there by the thousands.

If anybody is interested in a membership there I can put you in touch with the man.... think it is $1000.00 a year.
