Powe Denied Again by NCAA.............
no explanation given yet. There is one more appeal, filed by UM, to be heard this Thursday by the NCAA. At this point, I don't think he plays this season.
Powe has been told by the NCAA that he can re-take the 2-3 correspondence classes in question and if successfully completed, can be cleared to enter UM on scholarship in December for the spring semester. This scenario, or playing football in the CFL, now appear to be his two remaining options. I think it is too late to enter a JUCO at this point.
I expect that he will stay in school at UM, on his own dime this fall, and complete the courses he is currently enrolled in, work out to stay in shape, and re-take the questioned correspondence courses.
Not good for UM this fall. We could have used him on the DL.

He is about to sue the piss out of the NCAA and got a dang good case...I don't like Ole Miss being involved, but I like the NCAA being taken on finally by someone! He is being denied entry based on correspondence course completed by other athletes that the NCAA cleared and that is F'd up, Tommy Tuberville better keep a low profile or he might end up in court over this too...

Well, its time for us to move on. Let the lawyers do their thing, but it will not get Powe on the field this fall. But, it might provide some good side entertainment.
As appealing as taking on the NCAA in litigation might be, I think that Powe will need to do what is best for him ---especially if the NCAA throws him a bone for future eligibility through cooperation. Powe will likely be under some pressure to press the suit by the ACLU lawyers who will want to use this matter to pursue the cause of the ADA/rights of disabled. But, I think he needs some good advice on what is best for him personally.

his best option is to retake the classes in question (which he has already taken and passed once) this semester and enroll in january.... which is what the NCAA originally told him he could do and what will probably happen in the end. Pomonk brings a good point that he needs to listen to who he's been listening to, instead of listening to ACLU etc......

You know I have NEVER even heard of a clearinghouse before this year. Now since this year has started there has been nothing but trouble out of them. Keeping a kid with a learning disability out of school, because he has exceptional talent on the football field is crazy. If one were to really look at it going to college on a scholarship and getting the education that he needs and the training to overcome his learning disabilty is what Powe seems to need. However since he is such a stud on the football field, he will be denied to go to school. From what little I have read on this board about this, he seems to have a legit learning disability, and is also from a poor town. Is his family the type that can pay for him to go to college without the scholarship? If not the NCAA has done him a true disservice. Not to mention all the other players this year that were held up in the clearing house.
Is anyone aware of what exactly the clearninghouse is and who makes it up? It just seems to me this has never been a big deal before. I realize they are trying to keep everyone honest with transcripts and getting the big $$ from sports, but I feel this is getting out of control , and I am getting PO'd bout it and it doesn't even effect my school for now!

Jeff...... the clearinghouse is an organization hired out by the NCAA to determine potential student athletes elibility to member organizations. One of the problems associated with it however are that they meet once per week (thus the holdup often times).
Mud.... that's just one of the issues in the whole deal

Powe's family borrowed the money to send Powe to Hargrave for a year, and presumably are doing the same thing to send him to UM this fall semester ---probably some type of student loan that all students who qualify can obtain.
But, I don't think he will go on his own dime past this fall. IF he sticks it out and trys to enroll once more at UM for the spring semester and gets denied, then I think he will transfer to a JUCO on scholarship, play one fall, and then enter the NFL draft the following spring.
IF we can ever get him in the red and blue, I think there is a good chance he would stay in school until at least his junior year.

duckter.... you're off base. The quote from his mother was taken out of context. He can read, but not necessarily on the level of an average 18 year old college student. Keep in mind though, for it to be an average, there's plenty above AND below that level. I assume we should have told Patton to learn to read before he went to West Point.... or Churchill and Woodrow Wilson before they became leaders of their countries. Those 3 all were affluent enough to have the problem recognized at an early age and found ways of dealing with it.

Unrelated but interesting detail, perhaps that is why Patton's first year of college was not at West Point.
true, however, he did attend VMI for that one year, which was a pretty prestigeous school in it's own right in the day..... Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson just also happens to have been a graduate of VMI, and he also happened to be Dyslexic as well.... interesting tidbits/food for thought/etc

He'll have to borrow a good bit of money to cover this school expenses, other than pell grant which he may receive if his parents are low income.
All he can get for student loans is $1,275 a semester, and I know that the per semester tuition cost is well over 2K..........it was 1,900 my last semester at State.
Not to change the subject, but it's similar in discussion. My mom teaches 9th grade health at the high school. They just got their math and reading test results in from some testing awhile back, and you wouldn't believe the % of the entire 9th grade class that are on a 5th grade reading level. It's sad that our teachers today are passing these kids along instead of actually teaching them how to read and write.

How right you are Jeff. I never realized it until I was completely done with school how true the old addage is. You can NEVER beat a quality education. It has gotten me quite a few boats and motors, and I have only been out for five years. Until we come up with a better way to have a checks and balance system, we will never get better. Nowadays the only thing important to most teachers is passing leap tests, NOT how much the kids learn. It is quite sad, and from what I see at least over here, there are no good awnsers on the horizon. There are good teachers out there, but how do we get rid of the not so good ones?
How do you like my new "quote" abilities?? Pretty good for a roookie huh?

Teaching is a game of politics as well if you don't know.
High school teachers blame middle school teachers and they in turn blame the elem. teachers for NOT doing their job. I think it sucks as well and I have done the same thing as far as passing students (although I was basically "asked" to do it).
BUT when you have a 12 year in SECOND GRADE, THAT is a major problem as well (I saw this in LA). Same thing for 16 year-olds in the middle school setting. Something drastic needs to be done, but it can not be done in a year.
Back to Powe. I really don't know much about the story and I really don't care; but IF he got cleared to play, wouldn't that open the floodgates of superior players that have "learning disabilities" to legally play. Have any other players with similar problems been cleared in the past? I don't know, and I'm sure someone out there does know.
