Controlling Cockleburs & Sesbania in Browntop

I got around 40 acres of browntop that is 2 weeks old. It is about 3" tall right now. What should I use to control the cockleburs and when is the browntop old enough for me to spray. Thanks!

2,4-D will control these weeds in the browntop. Careful which formulation you use, as it will "get up and walk" with higher humid days. Cotton DOES NOT like 2,4-D at all.

How far along does the millet need to be before spraying or does it matter? Also is best to spray the cb's now or let them get larger?? Thanks!

In general, the younger the weed the easier it is to kill it. The browntop should be fine to spray now. AIM is another chemical that will work. It is more expensive than 2,4D but does not drift like 2,4D. I would use 2,4D if drifting was not a concern.

I have caused jap millet to lodge with a high rate of 2,4-D, so I would let the millet get a little size on it, although a normal rate won't hurt it. What are you spraying the millet with..i.e. 3 gal sprayer, four wheeler with boom, high boy, plane? When I put 2,4-D in a 3 gal sprayer, I usually use a good "glug". Aim would probably be out of the question if you're in a beaver slough or something, it would cost too much and you would have to buy way more than you need. D will probably be your best bet.

You probably need to get someone to help you calibrate it if you don't know how, you have to know how much water you're putting out and how fast you're going and how much chemical to put in the tank.

Spray with 24D - since brown top is in the grass family it will not be effected by the 24D

I use 6-7 oz of 2-4-D in a 15 gallon tank. I knocks the $#!+ out of cockleburrs.

I was told one time that 2,4-D would make some of the grasses, namely millet, lodge if sprayed at a high enough rate. I didn't believe it. So I tried for myself, and sure enough, it WILL make it lodge if sprayed at high rates.

Can also cause some problems if the plant is into the reproductive stage. There are a number of herbicides that will work on a wide rande of broadleaf weeds in millet or other grasses, just make sure you are "on label" when applying.
