MSU's Dixon breaks finger, will miss Saturday's game

STARKVILLE — Mississippi State freshman running back Anthony Dixon fractured a bone on his left hand at practice today and is expected to miss Saturday’s game against Auburn at Scott Field.

Dixon suffered the injury after catching a pass in the team’s scrimmage drills. His left pinkie finger was smashed during a collision with a defensive player.

Dixon is scheduled to undergo surgery Wednesday morning to repair the fracture, MSU trainer Paul Mock said after this afternoon’s practice.

The injury was yet another setback for the tough-luck Bulldogs, who lost starting quarterback Michael Henig to a broken collarbone in last Thursday’s season-opening loss to South Carolina.

The injury to Dixon happened just hours after the 6-foot-1, 229-pounder out of Terry High was named the starter for the Auburn game. Dixon, the Clarion-Ledger’s Metro Player of the Year, drew the promotion from coach Sylvester Croom after running for a team-high 64 yards in his college debut.

Dixon came off the bench against South Carolina to spell Brandon Thornton. The injury likely moves Thornton back into the starting role. Thornton ran for 25 yards on nine carries against South Carolina.

Mock said Dixon’s status beyond Saturday’s game is considered “week to week.”
The Bulldogs did get a boost at the position today when redshirt freshman Christian Ducre practiced for the first time since he was declared eligible by the NCAA.

Ducre, a transfer from Tulane, successfully appealed an NCAA rule that requires a transfer from a Division I-A program to sit out for a season unless he is moving to a lower division, such as Division II or I-AA.

Ducre argued in his appeal that he transferred because Tulane dropped his intended major of computer science in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Croom said before today’s practice that Ducre would likely only play special teams on Saturday against Auburn. But with Dixon now apparently out, it’s possible Ducre could see some time in the backfield.

Ducre was redshirted last season at Tulane, but rushed for 1,202 yards and 13 touchdowns as senior at Fontainbleau (La.) High in 2004 en route to Class 5A first-team All-State honors.

MSU's Dixon has successful surgery

By Michael Wallace
mwallace@clarionledger.com

Mississippi State freshman running back Anthony Dixon underwent successful surgery this morning to repair a fractured bone on his left hand, coach Sylvester Croom said today.

Dixon will miss Saturday’s game when the Bulldogs (0-1, 0-1 SEC) play No. 4-ranked Auburn (1-0, 0-0) at Scott Field. Croom said he is not certain when Dixon will be able to return to game action.

“Right now, all I know is that he’s not going to play Saturday,” Croom said during the SEC’s weekly coaches teleconference. “We’ll see how it goes.”

Dixon, a 6-foot-1, 229-pound back out of Terry High, was slated to start against Auburn after coming off the bench last week to gain a team-high 64 yards in MSU’s 15-0 season-opening loss to South Carolina.

Dixon broke the bone near the knuckle on his left pinkie finger after catching a screen pass during a practice drill Tuesday, just hours after Croom named him the starter for the Auburn game.

Dixon was named the Clarion-Ledger’s Metro Player of the year after the 2005 season.

Croom said that sophomore Brandon Thornton will instead start for the second straight week. Thornton will be spelled Saturday by senior Derek Ambrose and freshman Arnil Stallworth.

Freshman Christian Ducre was a candidate for the rotation this week, but Croom said he was not impressed by what he saw from Ducre in practice on Tuesday. Ducre, a transfer from Tulane, was cleared by the NCAA last weekend after he successfully appealed a rule that requires Division I-A transfers to sit out a season unless they are moving to a lower division.

“I looked at Ducre at practice yesterday, and to be honest with you, he didn’t show up very well,” Croom said. “So we’re going to go with Thornton, Ambrose and Stallworth there.”

lets face it the easiest way to go through saturday for a state fan is to go to bulldog bash friday night, get insanely drunk, find a party after the bash, stay up till 6 am, find an ugly girl who is still up and take her home, sleep till 3:30 cause your too hung over to care....

by this time the game will be over, and you'll prolly still be feelin too bad to give a shat....

thats my plan anyway
