Back from the game. It was close. I need proof before I pay up. I thought we got over 41 in the first quarter. Can't find any official stats by quarter. But, if I did lose the bet, I'll pay up.

Unfortunately I was not able to watch the game. I did catch that last 4 minutes of the first half and Ole Miss looked OK on offense, but our receivers were dropping balls that were in their hands and not under pressure.

The only bit of the defense I got to see what the pass to the running back and he let his defender go so that he could slip out for a dump pass that ended up in a TD to tie the game at 14-14.

What is our report card for those that saw the game? Was Memphis that good, or were we just not playing all that well?

I am not complaining, a win is a win, just wanted to get the true scoop.

Offense looked pretty good. D. McCluster, BJGE, and Brent Shaeffer played very well. McCluster has big play capabilities. BJGE runs well between the tackles and gets at least 3 yards every carry. And Brent played within himself, very confident, picked up key yards on runs, made some nice passes, and had no turnovers. Not a bad start at all.

Special teams looked good as well. The return game, with McCluster returning kicks, and Marshay Green returning punts, had several nice returns today creating good field position for Ole Miss. Our punter, Rob Park, had a good day averaging 43 yards a punt, with one long punt in excess of 50 yards that was downed on about the Memphis 2 yard line. Our kicker made all 4 PATS (did not attempt a field goal). Our kick off kicker pretty much put all his kicks into the end zone or at about the goal line, with the kick off team covering very well.

The defense, which was supposed to be our strength, looked pretty average and even bad at times. But, I will give Memphis some credit for that. Their offense is better than I expected. They run a spread offense and have a really good, efficient QB to run it. They have big, tall receivers who can catch the ball, and just dinky doo it down the field, with short passes that are hard to defend. Their game plan took our LBs out of many of the plays, and made it difficult to get any type of pass rush on the QB ---doesn't take long to get off a pass to a receiver only 3-4 yards down the field. By the end of the game, our D was dragging. While I credit Memphis with some our poor defensive performance, I still think we did not look that good at all. We will need to get much, much better on D in a hurry to beat Missouri on the road. Today's effort will not get it done.

Dude....no offense...but come on! We dropped ONE pass. ONE! It was a 3rd down and shoulda been caught, but, nevertheless it happens...don't be so dogmatic, our offense looked NIGHT AND DAY from what we've dealt with the last two seasons...

personally, i saw some very VERY positive things in the game...

one that stands out was how "clean" it was played (on both sides, but i'm focusing on the rebs). i'm not sure, but, i'm saying <4-5 penalties the whole game? a far cry from years past where it seemed we shot ourselves in the foot often. enough to say we're a disciplined team? maybe not, given an entire season is left to play, BUT, given normal game one jitters, i think it's a VERY positive sign.

scheaffer -- as monk said, looked confident in himself........and, the BIG thing to me, maintained composure under pressure and didn't just "throw it up"........

the 2 backs add a nice dimension....

all and all, the offense was a nice surprise.

defense? well, as stated, looked average to bad at times........BUT, also, as stated, we've heard all year that the D will be one of our strengths.....i'm gonna chalk it up to first game "junk" and rely on the folks that see these kids play day in and day out.........i bet we get better every game.

honestly, for the first time in a long time, i feel pretty positive after the first game..........coulda been better (it ALWAYS can  ) but i think we've got a LOT to work w/.
