i had a dove shoot sat. eve for father/sons and anyone else for that matter....when a neighbor drove up with a qt. of Milwaukees Best in hand and a 10 year old nephew with a pellet rifle..... could tell he had a few and i told them they could sit away from the other shooters at a snag tree so the boy might get to shoot one off a limb.... in about 10 minutes the uncle left and the boy wanted to get closer to the action... he proceded thru the sunflowers shootin finches off the sunflowers and sorgrahm... i quickly escorted him off to the side and explained that we were concerned about safety and he needed to be Careful... like talking to a tree.... he continued shooting low... so i went to the uncles' house and told him to either come sit with the boy or carry him home.... well i never took such a cussin in my life......... then i told him to come get his nephew and both leave....... i didn't mind running a drunk off but i felt sorry for the kid who was in tears..... i just don't like being responsible for a kid i can't control....
maybe i need to carry him to a hunter safety course or something later, but this kid is as mean as they come.... i hope every thing works out for the best, i feel bad about what happened.... what would you have done or do in the future ?

Shoot them sprigs on their first pass!
I agree, Judge, I would have done the same thing. Who brings their kid out and then LEAVES him there???? Of course, you can't explain this to the kid. Some folks are just plain loco.

Judge jb,
You did what was right and the only real option you had.
Safety always comes first. If someone is unsafe they need to be told and you did just that. If they dont cooperate afterwards they have to be removed from participating.
I can tell by the fact you had a father/son event, you were really trying to help the young'uns have an opportunity. Since you mention the kid is "mean", perhaps it's because of being around less than perfect roll models. Sounds like a project, but if you think you can pull it off, I'd agree, take him to a hunter education course and then some hunting or just shooting. It's ashamed when a kid misses an opportunity because of relatives that dont care and fail to teach right from wrong. I hope you'll give him a try. It could turn his whole life in a positive direction, whereas he may already be headed down the wrong path.
They say a mind is a terrible thing to waste. The same can be said for a kid.
I hate that you took a cussing but it sounds like you handled that with class as well. Thats tough to take and my hat's off to you.

Judge... you did the right thing... Keeping your cool... I know it would have been hard for me. In this day and age we need to do everything we can to encourage kids to take to the field to see what nature has to offer and for an adult to introduce them to the sport. If we're going to keep the tradition alive more of this needs to happen.
I'm more concerned about the parents of the child. Why would they let their child go off with a relative who was drinking in the first place? Maybe the child's parent didn't know or the uncle is the legal gaurdian but nevertheless the uncle should have known better.
My hat's off to you for your cool composure. You prevailed in the end.

You fixed the field for friends and then a friend cusses you. Hmm I would say he is not much of a friend Judge. No one likes to be put down for doing what they feel is right. If it was me I would have washed my hands of them. Your a good man for being so patient.
Guess it goes with your job.

The Stugats on this guy!! Going to the neighbor's house, a JUDGE no doubt, and sporting a brewski!! Have you let this guy off in the past or something? I can't believe he had the audacity to come with alcohol to a dove shoot with all the G-men you must know.
And to think the kid's uncle had to bring him to the shoot. Is the little fella's father out of the picture, and could that be part of the problem?
You did the right thing by the kid, and I hope you can further influence him positively with your nephew. While you are at it, you might impress on him the fact that alcohol brings out the worst in most people, and that you forgive his uncle for his behaviour. A little something for him to chew on.
You seem to gave the patience of Job.

judge, for safety's sake - how about a requirement that the kid hunt with an adult....
Can't BELIEVE you didn't let us in on the shoot.... I have a 14 y/o that would have taken a stick to the boy - if you ok'd it of course.

Sometimes you just have to close your eyes, count to ten, take a deep breath and remind yourself that you wouldn't look good in prison stripes... and just smile at that dumbass and walk away.
