Ole Miss star recruit's case to be heard Friday

OXFORD — Defensive tackle Jerrell Powe might find out as soon as Friday afternoon whether he’ll be eligible to play football this season for Ole Miss.
Powe, a highly rated recruit from Wayne County High School and Hargrave Military Academy, has not practiced yet with the Rebels or enrolled in school, pending certification by the NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse.
Clearinghouse officials are expected to review Powe’s case Friday, said David Wells, Ole Miss’ compliance director.
The Clearinghouse is an Iowa-based company that certifies the eligiblity of all freshman NCAA athletes. To qualify, an athlete must have at least a 2.5 grade point average in 14 core classes, such as English, math and science, plus a score of 17 on the ACT college entrance exam. A sliding scale is in place that adjusts for lower or higher GPAs, along with lower or higher test scores.
Wells said the Clearinghouse might rule Friday but might also ask for more documents to further review Powe’s case. Wells would not speculate on what the Clearinghouse is reviewing in Powe’s case, but one common hangup for recruits in past cases has been the certification of “core†classes. In some cases, a class considered to be a “core†class by a high school is not certified as such by the Clearinghouse.
