OXFORD — Offensive lineman John Jerry was cleared by the NCAA today and will be eligible to play football for Ole Miss this season.
Coach Ed Orgeron said Jerry returned to the field this afternoon after missing his first practice on Tuesday.
“John Jerry is eligible and we’re happy about that,†Orgeron said. “So is he. He was relieved. ... He was very anxious.â€
The 6-foot-5, 350-pound Jerry was permitted to participate in the first two weeks of practice because he had been admitted to the university. But Jerry, who is working with the first-team offense at right guard, was pulled off the field once classes began and he had yet to cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse.
Ole Miss now is waiting for word on the status of defensive tackle Jerrell Powe, who has not been cleared by the NCAA. On Tuesday, Orgeron said the Rebels believe they’ll hear an update on Powe’s status within the next week.

Does the NCAA just sit on its butt and dont do anything till right before the season starts. This organization is about screwed up. I was listening to a bulldog program and they were waiting for one of our players to be cleared. As far as I am concerned the NCAA needs to be overhauled or dismantled.

Alot of the time it's not the ncaa. It's the players and the institution they were at before moving on to div 1. Most kids wait til the last minute to do anything these days, many of which do so because they couldn't pass during fall and spring semester, had to attend summer sessions to graduate.
Many high schools offer classes that they say are core classes, which are required to attend a div 1 school. However, if the classes or class naming doesn't match what the ncaa wants, then they are SOL. Case in point, last week UM lost a kid because he ended up a .5 credit short on core classes. Instead of offering an algebra class, they offered alg 1a and 1b in split semesters to take the place of one alg class. However, the ncaa didn't recognize 1a as a class and only gave him a .5 credit for 1b.
The NCAA committee is meeting today to discuss finalizing transfers and waivers. MSU has applied for two waivers, and we'll find out later today if the guys will be able to play.

once again GH22..... you're wrong
in Vaughans case...... he took every math class offered at a memphis publi school, short of calculus.
As to the holdups, of the players we have outstanding right now, 3 graduated in late may and had their papers filed almost immediately, and the other took some summer school. The problem is not necessarily the institution these players are graduating from, though I won't take ALL the blame away from them; the problem is this, the clearinghouse has nothing pushing them to do anything, they are an understaffed group who meet once per week and expect to clear every NCAA athlete, thus causing the problems many schools are having now.... class has started and the drop/add deadline is a few days to a week away and they have still not heard from the Clearinghouse. Again, the Clearinghouse meets ONCE per week, not everyday, so to say that they aren't responsible for a large part of the holdups is crazy.
The other reason for the majority of the holdups at this point are players who were redflagged for various reasons. In Vaughans case, it's a clerical error by the school, again, he took every math class his memphis public school taught that wasn't called calculus. In other cases, the Clearinghouse will flag students who had questionable grades early in their high school careers, etc just to further review the file; and still in other cases the files will be questioned and the college and player will have to answer the questions presented by the clearinghouse, who, by the way, meets once per week.....

don't flatter yourself closetrebelwannabe22....
the issue remains that Vaughan took the two algebra classes Manassas offered and was referred to by his guidance counselor...... and no other students have ever had problems with college admissions b/c of those two classes.... as far as any student athletes, i don't even know if manassas has had any.
