Willis and Schaeffer

Postby NUTMEG » Wed Aug 23, 2006 6:59 am

ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. has named Patrick Willis as the nations top senior inside linebacker and Schaeffer as the nations no. 5 best junior quarterback.

It's a great day to be a REBEL.

Still awaiting reason for Shaeffer being held-out of last Saturday's scrimmage(?).
It's a great day to be a REBEL.
Of course it is, we're all undefeated at this point!

I am sure that I am biased, but to rate Schaeffer over Jamarcus Russell, a much more proven QB, is patently absurd. Russell is like 14-2 as a starter in the SEC.

Nutmeg,

I have seen him play for UT. I saw a freshmen with great athletic ability who was playing behind a line of future NFL players, along side future NFL runningbacks and receivers. He was the same freshmen who split snaps with Ainge, possibly the worst starting QB currently in the SEC. He is the same guy who will be behind an average at best offense line now, with below average receivers with decent but unproven running backs.

On the other hand, I have also seen Jamarcus Russell who is 14-2 as a starter in the SEC. Jamarcus may have the strongest arm in football, period, NFL or college. At 6-6, and 260, he is still fairly mobile and very strong. More than anything else, he is a proven winner. He is a proven winner with NFL talent sitting on the bench at receiver and running back.

The bottom line is, Ole Miss still doesn't know what they have at QB. Granted, there is little doubt they will be better off than last year, but is that really saying much? There is no doubt he is a talented athlete, extremely talented. However, so is Aaron Brooks formally of the Saints, soon to be fired by the Raiders. Furthermore, you can have all the athletic ability in the world in a QB, but if you have nobody to throw to, you are not going to be good.

My original point is that it is rediculous, in light of all of the proven QBs in the country, to rank an unproven QB as one of the elite, especially when he is throwing to receivers that would not start on 9 of the 12 SEC schools.

I think one thing everyone forgets about Schaeffer is that he's a passer first (hell of an arm) and uses his wheels second....

Yes jdtumallard I have seen him play in person. I have seen both of them play in person and if Schaeefer was at LSU this year as a starter he would propably be 10-2 at the end of the season.

Deltamud,

Kiper is not rating the Ole Miss line, recievers, or anything else. He is rating QB talent! If Russell played at Ole Miss his last 16 games he would be 3-13 with them. You know a player can never start a college game and be a NFL backup his rookie year because of his QB talent.
