Duck_Nutt, you have your opinion and I have mine, obviously. That is a fine list of problems we are facing and have faced and will continue to face. However, in light of all of those MAJOR problems that need to be fixed, don't you think the ability to fly a rebel flag without someone getting their panties in a wad is a small problem? That is my point, pick your battles, typically when big battles are won, the lesser ones tend to faid away. I don't buy into the "slippery slope" argument that you can't give in on anything. I don't think you should be prohibited from flying the rebel flag anywhere, but it seems a conscious decision not to might be in order at a college football game which showcases predominantly black athletes who, rightfully or wrongfully, get mad when they see it. It is a free country and you are free to express yourself as you please, rebel flags and all...but we are not free from consequence and when LSU or more likely, Ole Miss lose major recruits year in and year out who are on campus for visits because people love waving a flag, that is a consequence of choice on both sides. You wave your flag, it make you happy, it make Johnny Bluechip mad, he go to USC.

Sorry, but I'd say they've gone a long way in the wrong direction.

No, we have the ultimate loser. There's nothing good about selling out your heritage and principles for football/basketball players ect. Let Johnny Bluechip go to USC. If our heritage is his price, then it's too high. Way too high!

Sportsmen450, I fail to see how what happens on the UM campus could affect YOUR heritage. I'm pretty sure you are still free to do whatever you like at your home, on your property, in public, etc.

For that matter, no one is preventing anyone from flying or displaying a Rebel flag on the UM campus at tailgates, etc. The only prohibition is in the stadium in the form of a stick ban ---no flags on sticks. Most Rebel fans have stopped displaying the flag voluntarily because they recognize that many others see the flag differently than we do. And while this may be difficult for some of us to understand, it is reality. It wasn't the Civil War that pretty much stole the flag from us, it was racist idiots like the KKK who used the flag as their own symbol of hatred ---an abomination IMO. What a shame.

At one time, many years ago, almost every SEC team waved Rebel flags at football games. Not one SEC team now has a Rebel flag as an official symbol of their school. And UM was probably the last SEC school who had many fans still waving Rebel flags at games, on campus during games, etc. And now, that is pretty much gone. Apparently at LSU, it is making a comeback of sorts.

If the fans of other SEC schools (other than UM) think it is such a great thing to fly a Rebel flag at a football game in support of your school, then by all means grow some nads and exercise your constitutional rights. Don't let anyone stop you. All you MSU, LSU, UA, etc. fans who are mad about this issue, please show your anger by carrying Rebel flags to all your school's football games this year and wave them proudly and often, before during, and after the games. Quit talking so damned big about it, and do it.

To me personally, I think the flag deserves much more respect than to wave it and display it at a football game. It should be at Civil War memorials, cemetaries, and anywhere else it is appropriate to honor those brave fallen soldiers defending the South against the North's illegal, unconstitutional and unprovoked invasion of the South and our ancestors's homes. Like the American flag, I have too much respect for both to really enjoy seeing them displayed in the form of pants, shirts, bandanas, hats, bumper stickers, etc. But, that is just me. Others apparently were not raised the same way, and that is ok ---its a free country.

At one time, I was a loyal Ole Miss fan, but when thay started caving in to OUTSIDE pressure about this very issue, that started to erode.

The 'stick" ban was a very effective measure that ultimately led to the flag's demise.

It is a shame, but these groups using the flag for their purposesdoes not justifybanning it's use for other reasons.

This is because of the "stick" ban not personal choice.

A & B beg two questions. First, Is it because of losing "bluechip" playes or because it deserves more respect that the flag shouldn't be flown? And secondly, if this statement, "And UM was probably the last SEC school who had many fans still waving Rebel flags at games, on campus during games, etc. And now, that is pretty much gone." is true, how is Ole Miss losing recruits when the waving of flags on campus and at games is pretty much gone?

Well, in response to S450, its both, for me: the Rebel flag, that I personally like and respect, in its proper context, deserves much better respect than it is getting from many of its proponents; and its former prominent presence on campus during football games did negatively affect the image of UM and recruiting. No doubt every other SEC school who used to display the flag at games, etc. feels the same way---UA, UGA, etc.

And since it is likely that you have not set foot on UM's campus in decades, it strikes me as somewhat ironic that you would even voice an opinion on the matter. Apparently, all you ever cared for about UM was the Rebel flag. And you are free to display it anywhere you wish ---your home, property, public, auto, business, on your person, waving one at the football game of your choice (just not at UM on a stick in the stadium), etc. Knock yourself out. Quit talking so damned big about it and go to LSU and fight that battle yourself.

I'm done here. Out.

I guess ignorance would be bliss here, but I spend 30-50 days a year on the Ole Miss campus PoMunk. How about you???

Po Monkey Lounger wrote:Apparently, all you ever cared for about UM was the Rebel flag.
That would be incorrect. I cared greatly for the football program under the Vaught regime. Archie who? It was when they began selling out to the misguided political correctness that my interest waned.
