FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas quarterback Casey Dick missed his third straight practice Thursday night, as he continues to get treatment for soreness in his lower back.
Dick took snaps and threw a few passes at the start of practice to warm up, but the sophomore didn’t participate in any team drills. He watched from the sidelines as the Razorbacks held their first preseason practice in full pads.
“It’s pretty frustrating just coming out here,†Dick said. “(My back) is still being sore, so we’re just taking the precautions, just give it some rest, give it some time before we come back out here and try to put some wear on it.â€
Dick said he has been trying an array of different types of treatment to lessen the pain, including stretching and sitting in a cold and hot whirlpool.
“It’s feeling better,†Dick said. “It’s just a matter of whether it’s going to bug me or not.â€
Dick’s absence allowed junior Robert Johnson and freshman Mitch Mustain, who are also competing to be the starting quarterback, to split the snaps during team drills.
Johnson and Mustain each got into a rhythm during 11-on-11 drills, impressing Nutt with several long touchdown passes.
Mustain threw a short pass to former Springdale High teammate Damian Williams, who sprinted for a touchdown. On the very next play, Mustain found sophomore John Aaron Rees in the back of the end zone for another score.
Nutt said this was so far Mustain’s best day of practice.
Johnson, meanwhile, threw a deep pass to freshman London Crawford, who beat free safety Michael Grant and another defender for a diving touchdown catch.
Nutt said Dick should be able to participate in the first preseason scrimmage on Saturday evening. Nutt added that he still plans to name a starting quarterback by the middle of next week.
