HAHA !!! MSU Wed Morning Report

Postby Greenhead22 » Wed Aug 09, 2006 9:19 am

Wednesday’s morning practice began much the same as the day before, as the Bulldogs assembled for warm-ups without their head coach present for a second-straight day. Ten minutes later, with the players in their various groups, only a few noticed the arrival of a ‘walk-on’ in a red cross jersey, helmet, and shoulder pads.

It was Coach Sylvester Croom, of course, carted out to practice like any other injured player brought from the training room to watch. Croom trotted over to join some defensive linemen observing field goal drills, and when tackle Deljuan Robinson noticed this new teammate he abruptly broke into a cackle. Soon the entire team caught on to the joke along with sideline observers, including MSU president Dr. Robert Foglesong and a number of visiting Fulbright Scholars brought to watch an American college football practice.

Croom took a turn with the offensive line, his own old playing job, and ran a snap ‘blocking’ Royce Blackledge. The starting center did not take advantage of the situation. Croom also hiked the ball to quarterback Mike Henig in passing drills before finally shedding the gear and letting everyone get back to work. He had come up with the idea of ‘reporting’ in uniform yesterday, though the helmet and pads were a later addition to the plan.

That the head coach, who had been absent for both Tuesday practices on personal business, would break the routine this way reflects his general satisfaction with the first week of preseason practices. While there have been some mediocre days and at least one where Croom was clearly upset with the results, on the whole he is pleased with the efforts and performances in this week of camp. So far, that is.

But the fact that Croom could slip into practice almost unnoticed was also a reflection of one worrisome aspect of preseason.

Funny stuff. If Coach O had done something like that, it would be the topic of every sports message board and radio show in the south, with folks criticizing him unmercifully and claiming it to be just one more piece of evidence in support of the "Crazy Ed" myth.

I'd be willing to bet that if you put Croom up against Zero in a 2 man drill, Croom would knock him on his booty everytime.

You rebels seem a little self conscious about the big O. He wasn't mentioned until you brought it up. You ask us to talk about our own school and not om, and then you change the subject back to coach O.

by the way :D

Yes, we have already seen the damage Zero can do to fans in the Grove. We don't want that happening to our coach. :D

Myth or not, that is a great story.

For all that is said of O, he actually comes across as having a pretty calm demeanor. He talks like he swallowed a grunt call, but he seems pretty calm.

In my mind, he just doesn't fit the wine and cheese crowd in the Grove, but if he can turn them around his personality won't matter that much.

I guess I am highjacking (sorry) but how much time to O and Croom have to turn these programs around?

No offense to State fans and grads but I see O lasting longer than Croom. My honest opinion (which is worth nothing) is that State may be on the verge of their worst year of football in recent memory. I say this in response to recent articles about young, unrecruited players possibly receiving playing time and in light of the loss of Jerious. Croom has done a good job of stripping it down to the bare metal, but I don't know that he can advance it past this point.

agree with you 77 about the wine and cheese crowd...... however, IMO, that's one of the problems with Ole Miss, that persona of the school. The "cap and t-shirt" crowd has grown alot the past few years. People joked about Whiskey Alley, but truth be told the only reason a big deal was made about them IMO is that it was at Ole Miss, you know chandeleurs in the grove, wine, cigars, etc.

Maybe I missed it, but I think you boys don't get all of the Croom gag, He was the ringer from Mash the Movie with the cross on the jersey I could be and most likely wrong, but it does reference a hilarious movie. However, watching Miss Stank play disproves the theme song of the movie, "Suicide is Painless" That is all.
