NCAA Clock Changes

Postby MudHog » Wed Aug 09, 2006 1:52 pm

I seen an article on USA Today that was about the NCAA changing the operation of the time clock. Anybody know anything more about this. Supposedly it's to speed up the game. I see it as also making and breaking a game too. Players will have to get used to this in the preseason as it changes the game somewhat drastically.

1. Clock will being when the kicker has kicked the ball instead of when the received receives the ball.

2. The other change is during a change of possession. The clock will start when the ball is made ready for play.

I agree with the first rule and somewhat have always wondered why it wasn't like that. The second rule however sucks big time....it could take an additional 35 seconds off the clock before the first snap of a series after a punt or turnover. that sucks big time for a losing team late in the fourth quarter of a close game.

Some estimates indicate that this new rule change will shorten the game by as much as 15-25 plays. Teams are also going to have to get used to getting to the line quicker to run a play, as the clock will start when the ball is ready for play. No more waiting to start the clock on the first snap after a change of possession. I predict that we will see a lot of delay of game penalties this year, as well as some real clusterf#$s during the final minutes of close games. Timeouts will now be even more critical to save until potentially needed at the end of a game in order to be able to set up for a potential winning field goal or TD attempt.

I also see a potential for abuse of this rule by officials who may be trying to help out a particular team. They could call a fast ready to play for one team, and slow it down for the other. Way too much subjectivity in the hands of game officials already, IMO.

TV games will still be slowed by the usual tv timeouts.

NCAA might as well just change the sport from football to NCAAweruleandgovernyouassball and tax our money to support it rather than it being a entertainment we choose to support! F'd up. They can not leave well enough alone...mascots, rule changes, eligibility issues, etc. I guess they'll be instituting a fan dress code and luxury tax soon as well! College football is greatness, it's magical, it's perfect in our country, they make billions from it, everything about it is great, what F'ing moron thinks any damn thing OTHER than making it more visible is a good change???
