If the curl where the melon adjoins the vine is brown, it's ready to pick.

I've gotten more really good watermelons this summer than I remember in quite a while. I've gotten real fond of the "seedless" ones, but still get a regular one every once and awhile for old times sake and so I don't get rusty on my seed spittin' skills!
My Papaw used to plant them between corn rows after the corn got a certain height. I liked that cause I could sneak in the field from the woods side and bust one and eat it in the field without being seen from the house. He'd cuss the dang crows for gettin in his watermelons and I'd cuss them right along with him. I'm not sure he ever caught on, but he wouldn't have told me if he knew it was me. Sure do miss him and Mamaw! Everybody ought to grow up across the road from their Grandparents!
