Stan Torgerson Dead at 82

Postby Po Monkey Lounger » Wed Jun 28, 2006 7:40 am

I grew up listening to Stan, the voice of the Ole Miss Rebels, and still my favorite UM sports announcer of all time.

Stan's trademark call of "Heeeee Scoooooorrressss was legendary.

IT was a sad day when Stan was fired by TeleSouth as the UM announcer. And it is a sad day to learn of his passing. (Ditto the later firing of Lyman Hellums, Stan's sidekick and color commentator in the booth for many years).

Rest in peace, Stan. You were the best.

yep, "well-rounded" indeed

these young pups on here have probably never even heard of Stan Torgerson ---UM's former equivalent of Jack Cristol

too bad Stan did not get to stay around at UM as long as Jack has at MSU --the powers that be at UM just decided that Stan's physical appearance did not project the tv image they wanted for their coaches' shows and they tossed him out like yesterday's bathwater ---a sad day in UM history

but the style of calling games that Cristol and Torgerson developed, in a day and time when radio was the primary means through which most fans could follow UM and MSU sports, is steadily becoming a lost art as these master broadcasters pass on ---when Jack leaves the booth at MSU, it will truly be the end of the best radio sports era in Mississippi --- the new guys, despite their best efforts, just do not seem to measure up to the radio play by play standards these two gentlemen have set in MS

Stan was canned when Ken Cooper was hired in the early 70s. Charlie McAlexander was Stan's first replacement. Then, when Steve Sloan was hired in 1998, Stan was brought back to do the radio play by play announcing with Lyman Hellums, but they had another dude handling the tv coaches show. Then, after Brewer's first year or so, Stan was canned again, and Tom Stocker of Memphis was brought in to do the radio play by play and the tv coaches show. He lasted one year. Then David Kellum became the play by play radio announcer and also handled the tv coaches show. Kellum has been the man now for about 20 years.

And damn it does not seem like it should have been that long ago. But, time flies when you're having fun, always "waiting until next year".
