Notre Dame's Paul Mainieri, who has put together the best baseball program in the Big East Conference, is expected to be named the next coach at LSU.

Mainieri could be introduced as LSU's new coach as early as Wednesday
Mainieri's Notre Dame contract includes a buyout clause, which must be negotiated.

Mainieri, who played his freshman year at LSU in 1976, has led the Fighting Irish to six regular-season and five tournament Big East championships.

Under Mainieri, Notre Dame has made nine trips to the NCAA tournament in 12 seasons. The Fighting Irish advanced to the College World Series in 2002.

Notre Dame is one of ten teams who have advanced to the NCAA tournament the past eight years. The other schools are Cal State Fullerton, Clemson, Florida State, Miami, Oral Roberts, Rice, Stanford, Texas and Tulane.

During this decade, Mainieri has a 324-120-3 record for a .728 winning percentage. Only three programs – Rice (.752), Oral Roberts (.737) and Florida State (.734) have posted a better winning percentage during that time.

The Irish lost two straight games to College of Charleston and Kentucky in the NCAA regionals this past season. The winless performance at the Lexington (Ky.) Regional was the first for a Mainieri-coached Notre Dame squad in 23 post-season tournaments.

Notre Dame set a home attendance record during the 2006 season when the Irish averaged 2,514 fans per game.

Mainieri, whose father Demie won more than 1,000 games at Miami-Dade North Community College, played his final two years at the University of New Orleans under current New Orleans Zephyrs General Manager Ron Maestri.

Before going to Notre Dame, Mainieri was head coach at St. Thomas (Fla.) and Air Force. In his 24-year coaching career, Mainieri has an 864-492-4 record.
