MLB Draft

Postby Deltamud77 » Tue Jun 06, 2006 2:57 pm

I see that one of Ole Miss's players was drafted today real high. LSU has already lost their top two high school prospects to the draft.

I am pretty surprised that Reed went in the 4th round. I did not realize that he is that good. Educate me about the MLB draft -- I have heard that typically when a person is drafted in the top 5 rounds, they head to the pros without a doubt in most cases. After the 5th, it depends on the person as the signing bonus is not a huge amount. Is this true?

Major League Baseball is one of the hardest major league sports organizations to reach the "pro" level. None of the others have a minor/lower level that one must make it through prior to reaching the "show". The only thing that the recruits will be guaranteed is their signing bonus. For MLB draftee's their yearly pay only comes after they meet a minimum requirement of days at the pro level. I am not 100% certain, but it is somewhere in the 21 to 28 consecative days at the pro level. So, normally a minor leaguer will drop down before this day unless their pro affiliate has no other choice or plans to keep them up.

Reed will sign with the Cincinnati Reds. He will NOT wear the red and blue of my beloved Rebs.

Sign the best, and you WILL lose one or two every year to the draft. A good problem to have.

I admit I'm not a baseball follower, but it seems strange to me that the baseball draft is held during the CWS.

Is there a reason for that?

MLB's conspiracy against the growth of college baseball!!! Just like their under the table threats towards ESPN! Why you think ESPN only shows two weekends of baseball a year, and god only knows how many women's softball games!!!!!!!!!

ESPN will not compensate conferences for baseball coverage, reason they never show any games.

Blah blah blah. Let's rephrase this: "Sign a black kid that is going to get drafted, you better believe he isn't going to pass up a dollar!" Same as highschool basketballers......

Good thing that HS basketball players can't go pro until they are 21.

Nope, NBA finally changed the rule, main reason that Monta Ellis went ahead and went pro last year instead of coming to MSU.

Really? I didn't know that. So you mean State will be able to keep a HS recruit... We might get good again!
