Wildlife Science Degree

Im intrested in getting some kind of wildlife science degree or wildlife managent type degree. Wondering if anybody has one or is getting one that i could ask questions.

I would strongly suggest getting the forestry degree with the wildlife option. That is what I got, and I turned out OK

Hoyt,

I have an undergrad in Biology and a Master's in Fisheries Ecology. If you don't want to go beyond a 4-year degree you might want to reconsider. It can be very difficult to get a job with any type of room for upward movement without a Masters. I work in the private sector so I don't know for sure if this is the case, but Scott Baker would know for sure. I think to even apply for a biologist's position with the state you must have a Masters.

Also, if you work in the natural resource field you most likely aren't ever going to make your millions in it.

Amen to what ole' pondie had to say. A master's would be a great idea and would definitely help in either private or public sector. I have an undergrad in Forestry and am pursuing a Master's in Environmental Management. I work as an environmental consultant dealing with wetlands, wetlands permitting, wetlands mitigation, threatened and endangered species surveys, environmental spill response, and whatever else they throw at me.

As far as pay, pondman is right again, but I would rather make less and love what I do than be stuck behind a desk and be miserable. You might want to look at environmental programs or something of the like.

wellllll.......that being stuck behind the desk thing may not sound that great on paper, but it sure helps pay for the things you really like to do.

My advice, (from someone with undergrad in FO and Masters in Bus), if you really love the outdoors and enjoy managing your resources......go to dental school. I don't know a single dentist that works 5 days and he is never on call. They also make about 300K a year after they have been doing it a while.

Well as long as Scott Baker is working... I will def have somethone to clean up behind....Emblem is nice isnt it... its a good shield when the rocks start flying!!!

I think about what you said in that last paragraph everyday. I have a degree in finance and would like to get my masters in wildlife management from LSU. I have looked at there program online. Do you know what the prerec's would be for that program. I am sure that I would have to take some undergrad classes in biology and perhaps forestry to even be able to apply but if you wouldn't mind ask Chamberlin or one of the other professors at LSU if I stand a chance of getting in the Masters program with a finance degree.

Sorry, didn't mean to imply there is something wrong with working behind a desk. I just meant that I do not want to be in the office everyday. With my job, I have a good split between field and office time. Everybody has their own way of doing things.

You are definitely right on with the dentist comment. Grommet, don't know what the prereq's are but I will see what I can found out. You can also contact Dr. Charles Schilling for undergrad info or Dr. Allen Rutherford for grad info. I don't get around the building much anymore.
