Baseball updates
When the Bulldogs fly to South Carolina and play the Gamecocks in a three-game series beginning Friday night, they will do so with a new starting rotation. I finished speaking with coach Ron Polk a little while ago, and he shed some light on the situation.
Friday night: Aaron Weatherford, a freshman righty with a 1.33 ERA in 27 innings, mostly in relief. The most telling stat, though, is that his strikeout-to-walk ratio is nearly 10-to-1 (it's 31 Ks to 3 walks). That is a ridiculous. "If I had to second-guess myself, I should've made the decision (to start him) earlier," Polk said.
Saturday: Brooks Dunn, the senior lefty with a 5.00 ERA and a 6-4 record. Polk believes Dunn can stop walking people, which is the key to him succeeding. Hitters are still batting only .277 against him, but too many walks has killed him.
Sunday: TBA. Yes, that's right. To be determined, which is a total rarity with Polk. Asked about the options to start on Sunday, Polk named about 10 pitchers.
As he said, "It's all hands on deck." That means expect a quick hook, lots of pitchers, lots of variations, and going with the hot-hand if someone develops it. Polk said Josh Johnson could start Sunday, but only if he doesn't pitch in relief Saturday. This is a new approach. It's possible Sunday could see a whole bunch of different pitchers, so maybe it doesn't entirely matter who starts.
Also: freshman starter Matt Lea will not be on the 25-man roster, Polk said. He threw on the side in Hattiesburg and is still experiencing some discomfort in his tendinitis-laden shoulder. So he's on the shelf for now, more as a precaution than anything. He would have likely gotten one of the starting spots. Michael Rutledge, the third baseman who has been out with a bruised hand, is also making the trip. And Polk said first baseman Brad Jones is nearly 100 percent from his tendinitis. So this team is actually healthy. Or healthier.
