The baseball team is doing better (although there is still much room for improvement).
It appears that most of our signees will likely be eligible for this fall, particularly two immediate impact type defensive players ---J. Powe (DL) and Rory Johnson (LB). Those two could possibly start, or at least provide some sorely needed good quality depth.
Cliff Davis, a highly sought QB recruit in 2003 from Eupora, MS, who signed with the Tide, but opted to play professional baseball instead with the Astros, has recently been released by the Astros and has decided to play football for Ole Miss. He received his requested LOI release from the Tide, and the public announcement was made today. He will be considered a walk-on, even though his tuition will be paid by the Astros per his deal with them when he signed to play pro baseball. He is 6-5, 225 lbs and is 21 years old. After he knocks the rust off over the summer, he should add to the QB depth at UM, providing some more insurance in the event Shaeffer goes down ----or he could even seriously challenge Shaeffer for the starting nod (that would be a long-shot, IMO, due to his 3 year hiatus from football). He has 5 years to play 4, and can still take a redshirt year.
Coach O recently added a 12th commit for the 2007 class --a big DL out of Georgia, who is considered a highly sought after recruit. While UGA thinks they can bring him back into the fold if they want him, we shall see. But, I like the fact that Coach O seems to be attracting the attention of the big uglies on the DL ---- a key to winning titles.
The Rebel tennis team just locked up its 5th straight SEC West title. I only wish we could dominate like that in one of the big three sports.
I will stop now, so I won't start sounding like Big Gumbo and his glowing piggy reports. BTW: I am not predicting any football titles based upon this new information ----just pointing out some things that will definately help a dire situation.
