I'm pretty sure that any memberships to any golf courses aren't included in a coaches salary (at least they didn't used to be), neither are the other perks...dealership cars, hunting trips (or clubs), free shoes, etc....
as for Augusta National, I believe their member list is private so finding who is a member would be pretty tough as they generally don't want to release that list (particularly considering all the heat over the absence of female members)...but, if Hootie Johnson wants you to be in the club, you're in (lets not forget that this is the man who "fired" Gary McCord from the masters coverage for saying that the fringe of the greens had been "bikini waxed" and saying that Couples needed a body bag cause he was dead from their)....
SOS isn't a big fan of recruiting...but he had no problem with it while he was at UF, sounds like a South Carolina excuse as to why they are losing big time talent out of State...of course when he was at UF there was no real competition in the SEC east except for Tennessee...now in the east he has to recruit against UGA, UT, UF, and Auburn from the west....
Of course head coaches aren't your real recruiters, the assistants are, and it looks like SC is getting what they pay for there....

Po Monkey Lounger wrote:Webb, after doing a google search, I found all of the articles stating what I was referring to ----that Hootie Johnson, a former SC player and alum, was directly involved in the negotiations to lure Spurrier to UC. Several report indicated that part of the deal was that Spurrier would become a member of Augusta. I did not follow that story since that time to learn about the apparent controversy these early reports caused.
I see where Hootie later stated that any such membership to be given to Spurrier would not be part of any deal to coach at SC, but based instead upon personal relationships with the members. Riiiiiiight.
I appreciate you pointing out my error, especially since I do not follow the Gamecocks that much, nor am I a golfer and could care less about golf. But, if you believe that BS from Johnson to quell this controversy, then you will believe about anything. Spurrier WILL be a member of Augusta (assuming he is not a member right now) ---Book It.
The only problem with your logic is you dont know jack schit about the membership process at Augusta. You only speculate. Therefore your "book it " prediction is irrelevant.
but, if Hootie Johnson wants you to be in the club, you're in
Thats BS. Hootie is the Masters Tournament Chairman. He's not the only one involved in who is a member and who is not. Obviously membership and the tournament are 2 different things. Sure he has pull, but unless anyone truly knows the membership procedure, all talk is speculation.
Do you all honestly believe that Hootie Johnson is the supreme ruler of all things Augusta National? I think some of the other members might have some sayso in the membership process. Come on.

Actually having played the course as a guest 3 times I only have a limited knowlege.... here is my 2nd hand understanding of the process through college roomate who's father is a member. Unless something has changed recently Mr. Johnson is the Club Chairman for Augusta National (not just of the Masters)...and has the final say about who gets a membership...he has about as much stroke as you can get at Augusta national, unless Robert Tyre Jones, Jr. himself is resurrected...
To get a membership at Augusta you have to be nominated by a member, the bigger the better (Hootie Johnson would do nicely)...yes, it is possible that someone could blackball Spurrier if Hootie wanted him in, I guess...but it wouldn't probably be all that likely...as a side note Lou Holtz was a member while at USC, but I'm not sure what happened to his slot after he left (yes, he only joined when he moved to Columbia not before)....
Of course unless things have changed its only open to play about 6 months out of the year...so Spurrier may not want in for just half a year

Wiemhunter, I run a tight ship on the defense, so be careful what you wish for.
We would run the 4-3 Ghengis Khan defense, with a relentless headhunter mentality, to punish opponents into submission ---rip off their heads and crap down their necks, with lots of slobberknocking going on all over the field. All would fear us.
