The Texas a&m crew better start doing better for the money they are receiving. I really do think that it is ridiculous what some of these coaches are getting paid, 2 million dollars for a headliner college coach, i guess that is why tution keeps going up. The worst part of it is, is that some fans brag about how much they pay their coaches.

One observation---with the exception of Texas A&M and UT (last season), it looks like you pretty much get what you pay for.

I am hoping that UM starts getting its money's worth starting this fall. I would love for us to be doing so well that we have to up the ante to keep our coach.

But, if you hire an up and coming type coach, who is unproven as a head coach, then you usually do not start them out as high as what you would have to pay a proven head coach making an upward or lateral move.

Alabama's salaries are much lower than Auburn's for instance, but what is reflected in that are the different situations in which the head coach arrived. Tub was a somewhat proven head coach. Shula was an up and coming type coach. Tub has won SEC titles at Auburn and directed them to one undefeated season. And he got raises after such accomplishments. Once Shula has put together some more winning seasons and has that really good championship season (if ever), then the Tide will have to ante up and pay the piper to keep his salary competive with potential talent raiders.

A good head coach and staff that brings titles to a school is worth every bit of the salaries they receive ----the money they bring in for the school far outweighs these salaries.

Interesting to see Whoo-Pig so low. I thought with all the talk of him heading to Nebraska a couple of years ago, Nutt would have gotten a bigger pay day.

chit boys all you hear about here in the great state of mississippi is how tight the budget is and expected shortfalls and money is scarce..

yet croom and his staff make $2,230,000 and some change.. yet all we get is 2-3 wins a year... bwabwabwaa..

i tell you what.. i could cut that $2,230,000 figure in damn near half say

maybe say $ 1,500,000 .. name my self as head coach with the following assistants from the ms ducks board and still win just as many games..

here's my stafff::

Me: head coach// tight ends.. salary $350,000
don miller: offensive line.. salary $200,000
joe kain: offensive cord. quaterbacks.. salary $300,000
fathead lindsay: defensive line// salary$200,000
po monk: def cordiantor... salary $250,000 (sorry for the pay cut)
wemihunter: def backs... $125,000
money: recivers $115,000
gh22" special teams/running backs $100,000....

see i just saved the school approx $600,000 and i can just about guarntee 2 or 3 wins a year.. now thats a deal

I am surprised to see the Piggies so low as well. With all the big talking that Big Gumbo does about every building, outhouse, shop, barn, hottub, or other structure being built on the hill, as well as all the big talk about big time donors, the Waltons, the chicken plucker folks, and others, I would have thought UPIG would be leading the way in college football in the coaching salaries area ---at least in the top 5. But, surprisingly, they are lagging behind even UM and MSU.

Gordon, that is a good observation. Perhaps visor boy's Augusta membership is not included in the "salary" category. The Augusta deal I believe is what sealed the deal for SC to get Spurrier. Normally, I would be a little concerned about a coach that loved golf that much, but Spurrier has proved that he can get it done. But, in order for SC to get to the top of the East, I suspect that even ol Steve is going to have to stop playing as much golf and hit the recruiting trail more often. I have heard that Spurrier does not like recruiting. And you cannot win titles without the horses.

Are you sure Spurrier is a member?

I'm pretty certain that I read that his membership was part of the deal with SC. I don't know all the details about his membership, just what was reported in the news when he was being courted by SC.

Webb, after doing a google search, I found all of the articles stating what I was referring to ----that Hootie Johnson, a former SC player and alum, was directly involved in the negotiations to lure Spurrier to UC. Several report indicated that part of the deal was that Spurrier would become a member of Augusta. I did not follow that story since that time to learn about the apparent controversy these early reports caused.

I see where Hootie later stated that any such membership to be given to Spurrier would not be part of any deal to coach at SC, but based instead upon personal relationships with the members. Riiiiiiight.

I appreciate you pointing out my error, especially since I do not follow the Gamecocks that much, nor am I a golfer and could care less about golf. But, if you believe that BS from Johnson to quell this controversy, then you will believe about anything. Spurrier WILL be a member of Augusta (assuming he is not a member right now) ---Book It.
