Saw on the sports forum where gas prices are up again. Anyone heard if the prices are supposed to drop or level out any time soon?

Heard it could be as high as $3.15 a gallon by the middle/end of the summer

Talked with a friend of mine who is an engineer for one of the big oil companies about a week ago about the gas prices. As recently as five years ago I could buy gas in southern Louisiana for around $1 per gallon. I asked him if we would ever see gas under $2 per gallon and he said no way. He said "worldwide demand is up" (I just don't see demand being up that much in five years) and more than anything there is a lot of "fear" built into the price because of the instability in the middle east.

It is really a catch 22. I think the oil companies are taking advantage of the situation, yet I am all about free market capitalism, therefore I am not in favor of the government taking control of the pricing and output. Exxon just replaced Walmart atop the Fortune 500. That should tell us something.

The increased demand he speaks of is called China and India. They are now on the way up as far as industrialized nations are concerned. So we are soon to be competing with a couple billion more drivers who need fuel in the near future as well as large industrial users. Not to mention the fact that they have better relations with Middle Eastern countries than we do! (So don't go and start thinking that we will give up on our nation building efforts in Iraq anytime soon. We need friendly governments in an inhospitable region to do business.) As far as I am concerned the sooner we can start burning corn the better off we will be. But for now I will like you continue to bend over and take it up the booty at the pump.

I am well aware of the demand that China and India are placing on the world market. However, in my scepticism of the oil companies, I doubt that there has been an increase demand of 150 to 200% in the last five years worldwide. We are having to hold the oil companies to an honor system standard and I question their honor.

I do agree that corn, soy and feedstock biofuels would help put a slight hole in the world market. We import 5 million barrels of oil from OPEC nations every day in the US. At $65 per barrel, that is $325 million US dollars headed to the middle east every day. This month alone $12 Billion dollars will leave the US headed to OPEC nations. If we could cut into that by five or 10 percent, the worldwide effect over the course of a year would be astounding. (10% of $325 Million is $32.5 million x 365 = $11.86 Billion). That is almost $12 Billion US dollars staying in the US, some of which is going to the farmers in our great state. That is one full month out of the calender year that the OPEC nations don't have us by the balls.

I can't believe that a group of Mississippi or Louisiana farmers have not gotten together to workout some sort of co-op of growers and refiners to get a jump on other states in the ethanol game. Maybe they have and I have not heard about it. Has anybody heard of anything like this taking place? If not who wants in?

Oil companies allways find a way to scare and intimidate people into believing that gas prices are as low as possible. Before the war it was always "Gas is up b/c of heating oil demands" and "Gas is up b/c of summer driving" Always a reason just depends on the season

Then we invade Iraq and prices jump well over $2. I remember buying gas in 1997 in LittleRock Ark for .89 Wow now that they see we'll pay 2.10-2.15 for some petro they keep the prices up. Sadam falls, US takes over most of Iraq. Kuwait and SArabia are stable and prices stay up.

Katrina comes along and because of true supply/demand prices are 2.80. Well Mr. Exxon and Mr. Shell see us lined up around the block and waitnig for hours to get this overpriced gas. They think that "We'll drop prices for a while but we can jack them up eventually b/c we have proof they will pay it.

Now instead of the "summer driving excuse" they feed us some crap like "India really has a large need and so does china" If you believe that is responsible for gas tripling in price in teh last 8-10 years your a duma$$. These guys dont make 10 billion for being idiots. They want us to believe that this sudden demand came out of no where and that they were totally caught unaware. "Oooops we just dont have enought to keep you prices below 2.5.
