had a good dove spot ready w/ sunflowers, plenty of shade for me and was really looking forward to dove season...then, guess what, the dang deer ate everyone of the darn things to the ground...i mean all of em...spent lots of money and time to get this ready and it's all gone...pulled up and even had a few doves fly out of it, i guess just cleaning up...so if anyone has any suggestions, or a place to hang my weary head opening morning, i'd appreciate it...am willing to pay, just want to shoot some...man, frustrated, really frustrated

gator,
I would go and buy some bags of sunflower seeds and throw them out I mean pile them up. The day before season go and disk the ground. You should hold some dovves until the season.

What's a deer?
dang deer
msb, man, anytime...you might have a hard time w/ my dad though...he's been managing it for years and years...it's some good stuff...i've seen deer fighting every year, passed up more bucks than i can count waiting on the "man"...i really just go a few times a year for some meat and leave the bucks for him to deal w/...he's semi-retired so he hunts almost every morning...my last buck to kill was 2 years ago...11 pt., 10 inch tines, 16.5 inside spread, and weighed in at a whopping 155 lbs...low body weight, so we had him aged and they said it was a 2.5 to 3 year old to me that says something is going right...we kill about 5 does on average a year, it just depends on what the biologist says and it has really paid off...he select cuts it, has replanted more oaks than i care to count and has put in about 50 fruit trees (apple, pear, crabapple)...i know you probably didn't want to hear bout it but it's my dad's baby and i'm amazed everytime i visit my parents at what he's done to the place...it used to be a cattle farm...anyway, we've got a silent agreement that i leave him the deer and he leaves the ducks for me... Gator, sounds like you have a great set-up, and a wonderful legacy to follow...

Hey Gator:
Sunflowers are not #1 on the deer food menu, particularly in a year like this when the ample rainfall has provided tremendous browse resources in the woods...
If you planted any significant quantity and the deer ate all of them, you might have too many deer- a very common problem in MS...
As for spreading sunflower seeds, I dont recommend that unless you want legal trouble...That would definitely constitute baiting...
On the other hand, you could disc the sunflower under completely and legally seed wheat at 100# per acre as a wildlife food plot for deer...That means seed it once at the normal seeding rate and hunt it...For best results, you should put the seed out about 7-10 days before your hunt...Contrary to popular opinion, you dont have to cover the seed...Just legally seed it and leave it alone...If it rains and the seed germinates you cant disc it under and seed it again...That would constitute baiting...

Wildfowler, I keep trying to help you figure out what a "deer" is. They are large brown animals that alot of people in rural central Mississippi shoot at night with high-powered rifles, after drinking lots of beer and/or Jim Beam. Does that help?

hammer, i made the field sound a little bigger than it actually is...it's really just a deer plot that we have that really holds alot of birds...i planted it for really just me and my dog...there's always a big pay-to-hunt field next door that attracts alot of attention from birds and gamewardens alike if'n you know what i mean...i would go over there and shoot but the whole once the beer comes out the guns go away just never took there and i don't fool w/ the brew when guns and hunters/children are around so i planted this thinking i could catch some straglers that wanted a nice normally safe place to feed...small enough for me and my first year dog and that's about it...as for the deer, there in line according to the biologist my dad uses...i don't understand how they know but shoot, he went to school for it so i take his word...i've noticed though that when something new is introduced to them that they will eat, they will eat it down until it's all gone...like dang sheep...dad keeps his garden out there and he's put an electric fence around it and often can be found urinating around it to help keep them away...i think they (deer) are just 'lazy' animals and if something is easy for them to eat they will as opposed to simple grasses and 'briars' that they normally eat...my dad's part of a co-op of landowners...they all use the same biologist, the same rules, they just hunt their land only...it's pretty cool, couple times a year they get together for a cooking or something...it has really paid off for the deer...wildfowler and hambone, deer are big, fury, and will eat anything...they are pretty good to eat too, ya'll should try to get em at night, that's when i hear they're tenderest...sorry for this rather long-winded response but i just wanted to type...got some gumbo cooking and a brew in my hand but no gun

I'm convinced that for every Deer you shoot in Mississippi, 3 more are produced.
Hell with all the rain this year, you can expect a bumper crop!
Hambone, Wildfowler....you guys coming to the annual "round-up" this year?

Gator they got into mine abou the time the flower was about to open and the ones they ate just re-buded. Guy told me that you could take a couple of raw eggs and put them in a pump-up sprayer with 2-3 gals of water. Let them sit in the sun for a day ro so and then spray your flowers down. Did't ry it myself, didn't want my back-pack sprayer smelling like that. Guy swore up and down that it would keep the wild "goats" out of them.

Hey WNG, which roundup are you talking about, the one in the "West Virginia of Mississippi" or the one at Softcall's secret spot? Either way, it will depend on what MIssissippi does with the duck season. I hear that my towheads, or at least one of them, are coming out to see you, JGrog and BGrog this weekend. You had better put all the breakables away!

Hambone, I'm sure he's talking about the annual goat killin' up in North MS. I might like to come up and check out some new scenery if it the goat killin' does overlap with duck season this year if the local waters are cooperating.
Might even be able to talk Grog into putting on a life vest again.
