OXFORD — Two Ole Miss athletes - offensive lineman Corey Actis and pitcher Nick Hetland - were arrested on alcohol-related offenses last month.
According to Lafayette County Detention Center records, Actis, 20, was arrested by the University Police Department and charged with disorderly conduct and public drunkenness on Feb. 19. He was booked int the detention center at 2:15 a.m. and released at 8:45.
Hetland, 21, was arrested and charged by UPD with public drunkenness on Feb. 27. He was booked in at 2:22 a.m. and released at 4:20.
A resolution for Hetland's arrest couldn't be obtained late Friday afternoon.
According to Lafayette County justice court records, Actis pled guilty for the misdemeanor charges on Feb. 28 and was ordered to pay $203 in fines.
The 6-foot-5, 295-pound Actis arrived on campus for the spring semester after transferring from Bakersfield (Calif.) Community College.
The junior is one of Ole Miss' 31 signees in the 2006 class and will be counted on to contribute immediately.
He entered the spring as Ole Miss' second-team center. Coach Ed Orgeron said Actis worked with the first team Monday.
Orgeron said Actis' punishment has been dealt with internally.
"Everything is being handled in-house and has been handled in-house," said Orgeron, when asked if Actis would miss games next season. "That's the way we do it."
Actis is at least the fifth football team member that has been arrested since last January.
Hetland also is in his first season after transferring from Clarendon (Texas) Junior College.
The 6-foot-2, 195-pounder entered the season as one of Ole Miss' three weekend starters. He is 1-0 with a 1.86 earned run average in 9 2/3 innings of work.
"It's something we knew about the day it happened," Bianco said. "It was one of those things that he was punished for and we're trying to move on with the season."
Ole Miss outfielder Mark Wright was suspended for three games after his off-season arrest for driving under the influence.
Hetland hasn't pitched since Feb. 25. Bianco said the junior has experienced some tenderness in his throwing shoulder.
But Bianco said Hetland is scheduled to start against Murray State on Wednesday afternoon.

Jeff, you are a youngun, but you should know by now not to throw stones when you're living in a glass house.
I think it is some metaphysical law of the cosmos ----as soon as you start trashing another program for one of their athletes getting into trouble, or thumping your chest at what good citizens all of your schools' athletes are, then one or more of your own schools' athletes gets into trouble. Happens every time.
Actis has hopefully learned his lesson about the Oxford Gestapo and will adjust his behavior accordingly. There seems to be a learning curve for many out-of-state signees (and coaches) not already familiar with the reign of terror in Oxford. I am certain that the negative publicity from the CL and Coach O's internal punishment of Actis was sufficient for this misdemeanor crime.

Nutmeg, such a suggestion is waaaaaaaay too practical for the anti-UM crowd on this board. Nope, to them, an underage young man at UM getting caught with a beer (gasp!
) on campus is a HYENAS offense.
While, on the other hand, getting caught selling crack, in possession of and passing counterfeit money, beating up a security guard, pistol whipping another student, etc. etc. is no problemo.

Hey Po Monkey
First, the word is heinous (courtesy of a good MSU education).
Second, you are right about the drinking. What's truly heinous is that the drinking age law was ever changed from 18 to 21 in the first place. I will never condemn a college student for drinking, or even being drunk, (Lord knows I did my share of it at State) as long as he doesn't decide to start fighting the cops, raping the women or otherwise acting like a frikkin' felon.
Third, help me out here. See if I got your matching game right: A) Dontae "Tippytoes" Walker, B) Our "other" Parade All-American running back (can't even remember his name, or more likely don't want to), C) ?????? and D) Marcus Bullard.
And lastly, good riddance to all of those thugs. Because so many "star" atheletes are given special priviledges, treated like gods, given countless "second" chances, and coddled due to their "impoverished family living conditions" (be they urban or rural) what's truly surprising is that we don't have more heinous incidents than what we have now. But as the family unit continues to be destroyed and moral values continue to slide, we'll just see more and more of it as the years go on. All the schools can do is try to measure the character of the student atheletes they recruit, educate them on the pitfalls of illegal behavior, pray for the best, and deal firmly with the transgressors.

Hyenas was capitalized which I think was meant to denote it as a laughable offense. This in line with a Hyena's reputation for being "laughing". However, the sarcasm could be lost on me as I went to Southern Miss.

great pithy point seymore, I feel that your interpretations of the po monkey analogy are in fact very precise and I am sure that much analytical thinking went on while coming to your conclusion. Bravo

To my buddy Seymore ------BINGO!.
Bullreds, I intentionally mispelled this word for humor and emphasis (borrowing a bit from a scene from the movie "My Cousin Vinny", where the prosecutor describes to the jury, in his opening statement, a "hyenas" crime). But, just for you, I'll try to be more formal and deliberate in the future.
NOT.

BTW, Bullreds, good MSU thug trivia answers. The answer to (c) is a current key player on the MSU roster ----HINT: the "hyenas"
offense was committed after he signed with MSU, but before his first fall semester ---pretty much brushed under the rug and downgraded to a disturbing the peace charge or something like that.
And I suppose that a classic example of this cosmos effect I referenced above, was Coach Croom bragging to the media that MSU had not had any players arrested, etc. for some period of time since he came on board, then thereafter, within the next week, several MSU football players were involved in a bar fighting incident at the infamous Hunt Club. Classic.
Another involved my own thinking(and perhaps the thinking of other Reb fans). I had once deluded myself into thinking that Coach Cut was a great judge of character in young men and only recruited kids of great character ----then within a period of about 1 1/2 years, I learned of Joe Gunn's numerous brushes with the law(not just the one or two that had previously been disclosed), our fullback beat the hell out of law student outside of a bar in Oxford, and one of our running backs and a starting linebacker were arrested in Memphis while brandishing a pistol on Beale Street, with one of the two yutes(
) aiming it at an undercover policeman.
Those were sobering moments of clarity, when I finally realized that no coach, I don't care how strict, will ever be able to prevent 85 kids from getting into any type of trouble at all while at college playing football ----they have have way too much time away from practice and the coach during the school year and summers for such an expectation to be realistic.
So, it amuses me now to see fans poking at other fans of rival schools over these type matters. It is just a matter of time before what goes around comes around. As Clint Eastwood said in "The Forgiven" : "We've all got it coming, boy."
