Where can I buy 2,4,D

Postby Don Miller » Wed Mar 01, 2006 3:15 pm

I need to do some yard spraying for onions and broadleaf weeds. The feed and seed stores sell the watered down kind at a big mark up. Can the real stuff be bought without some sort of permit? If so, who has the best prices?

Call Sanders Inc, UAP, or any other chemical company and they will fix you up. You will probably have to buy a 2.5 gal jug.

Most Co-Ops mark the price up so bad and its not the same thing most of the time its an off brand. How much you need? I will look around the shop and if you don't need much I will get you some if i have any left over

I doubt you will find pure 2-4D for purchase. Far as I know it's banned. That stuff is potent enough to sterlize the ground to where NOTHING will grow.

You can buy it online diluted for $23 per gallon plus shipping: http://lawn-and-garden.hardwarestore.co ... 73469.aspx

Choc. seal is right you gotta have the private applicators certificate to get the good stuff. What type of grass do you have? If you have bermuda and it is still dormant you can get away with a light application of roundup without much damage to your grass, but you better hurry time is running out on that.

Become friends with a farmer for the good stuff. :) I will probably be in need of some after this first spray as well. All the green stuff popping up is weeds, it won't be long until the lawn mowers get cranked up again.

2,4-D is a contact hormonal plant herbicide, and has NOT been banned. Use caution, however, when spraying it around other susceptible plants. Also, it will NOT sterilize your soil, when applied, as directed. Perhaps you are thinking about 2,4,5-T, which HAS been taken off the market.

Thanks, dedux for correcting mudhog who stated that 2,4-D would sterlize the ground, and the last time I checked it was not a restricted use chemical. This means you don't have to have a lic. to purchase it. How ever with some of the knowledge I see flying around here it might be wise if someone was required to have some sort of learning about pesticides and there use!
2,4-D is one of the components in Trimec along with 2-(2-methyl-4- chlorophnooxy) and Dicamba. Also you can find Trimec plus which has MSMA added ( don't try to mix these two your self as you will get a strange jello like substance.) These products offer a better and broader spectrum of weed control than 2,4-D alone.
Sorry for the rant, but it appears we have a few topwaters here as far as chemical knowledge goes.
