F&W-----------Thanks for proof reading my script..I needed you in college and i would not have lost my scholarship and would not have had to pay all those student loans back.

I was about ot fall asleep last night when i posted. One of them was supposed to be an 1187.

Remeber that this was not F&S's best list, it was teh result of a survey they sent out.

I was surprised that Beretta was not somewhere in the article, but it was not mentioned anywhere.

The 11-87 should not be on there. Its had problems since it came out. The wingmaster is twice the gun the 870 Super Magnum is and alot better than the standard 870 Express. 870 Express isn't bad though!

Who ever wrote that article was a quack! Browning A-5, Winchester Model 12, Remington 870, and now the Benelli SBE are by far the most widly used waterfowl widowmakers (you could probably through in a Mossberg). This cat did not even mention any old doubles in his top five that probably killed more ducks than any of the others combined(L.C. Smith, A.H. Fox, or Parker Brothers). This guy must write for the New York times as well, that or it is a 12 year old kid. Makes me glad that I didn't cancel my Mississippi Game & Fish and pick up a Field & Stream.

i must correct something. Those were the shotguns in the centerfold as the ones that were at the top of the most categories I assume.

The BEst all around shotgun category went like this:

The best waterfowl category went like this:

I find it hard to believe that the Mossberg 835 does not fall into that Waterfowl category.

My dad gave me a remington 1100 on my fiftenth birthday.... That was eighteen years ago... The damn thing has been cleaned maybe four times... It shoots like it did the first time I used it... I was wanting to buy my sons a gun.. I was thinking about the 870...

Best all around shotgun I ever owned was an Ithaca Model 37 Featherlite. It was made before World War II and still shoots great.

Had trouble ejecting a lot of different types of shells. It would hardly ever eject 3.5 inch unless they were remington shells. I like shooting supremes and the 3 inch would eject fine for the most part but my 3.5's had lots of problems. I thought the gun just was not broken in but I shot a case and a half and it got better but it is still having some jams.

You need to take a dremel with felt head and polish out the chamber. No biggie, but some of the 870 models most practical for ducking have just enough rough edging to catch those shells from ejecting.

The survey was taken by the readers of the magazine, not the writers and the editors. Most of the guns listed are realitively inexpensive, fairly new models, and a lot of these guns are in circulation. This all means the average Joe has more exposure to these types of guns and is more likely to rank them. Guns like the Model 12 are not as abundant and not used as frequently and therefore, not may not be why they were ranked.
