GPS ??
Any input on which ones are better than the other?? Does any body use them? They seem as if they could be useful for hunting.
GPS ??
They ARE extremely useful for hunting......I've got one that has different 'icons' for various species of game....and you just push the one for like, ducks.....and it'll display the coordinates to the nearest duck from your present location.......as well as those that are sitting within 40yds of every public road in a 10 mile radius. 'Comes with a free 'dash' mount.......'never have to leave the truck.

i been huntin the same bottoms all my life and never needed a GPS....{i been lost a few times in my life} ain't it strange that every spot of ground has a number???? kinda scary ain't it? and i thought that the Govmt. was wasting money on all those Rockets in the 70's... guess we wouldn't be here on the inter-net with out em....
go with a quality machine and check to see if it is up-grade compatabile....
judge jb
and we bitch about battery powered ducks....

Trey, the only reason I ever wanted a GPS was I thought it would help me navigate on water, in a dense fog. WRONG! I borrowed one from a buddy. It wasn't really accurate enough to steer me within 100yds of my pre-programmed 'waypoints'.....'good way to get in trouble. In those conditions, you better be looking for what you're fixin' to HIT, rather than focusing on a 2"x2" backlit display of 'connect-a-dot'......they don't tell you when that 'barge' is fixin' to run yo ass over, ya know. If you see ripples, you better figure-out what's makin'em and get the hell outa the way. Consequently, I never bought a GPS. I still use my eyes 'n ears.
I imagine Captn 'T' can recommend some good units.

GPS ??
That is what I was thinking, but would they be helpful getting back to a honey hole you found on the river, if you saved the location? It just seems as if it would be more reliable than using the "bright eyes" or survey tape?? And if so, which one is better than the rest for the money?
GPS ??
Sorry, I don't know which one is 'best' for the money.....maybe someone else can help you, there.
Survey tape tells EVERYBODY ELSE that something is 'special' about that place, too......'also constitutes 'litter' in my book.
Whatever happened to using trees as 'markers'? You walk a 'line' enough times, you get to know all the trees on a first-name basis.
I hardly ever use a light to navigate through the stumps, anymore (in the dark). I've hit every stump OUT THERE so many times, that I know how far to the left of THAT tree to go and which snag to line-up on, next. (I've named all them, too.......bearing similarity to some of the most common explitives).
It's like 'feeling your way in there, man......you just know it by heart.....PLUS, it's extremely gratifying knowing you 'did-it' using only your senses.
Every once in a while you even slip-up on a gobbler that's still sittin' in his roost tree over that slough. You wouldn't have seen him with that Q-beam scanning the water.
I guess a GPS they might be helpful in getting you 'in'.......but I prefer the old-fashioned way of gettin' around in the woods. This world is 'gadgeted' to DEATH! After awhile, you just get sick of'em! Gadgets......
'You wanna be a 'true outdoorsman' like what's in your signature......don't use 'gadgets'.

They are real useful for finding and marking your way back out to wrecks in the Gulf. Other than that, too much trouble for me. Guess I am too stuck on the old Boy Scout compass mentality.
GPS ??
I have a Magellan and use it in the river on those real foggy mornings. Even though I know the river pretty dang well, when the fog is thicker than gumbo the GPS does okay. It can be a pain in the rear to try and read the GPS while navigating a boat and paying attention to what's ahead. They are not a cure all and can get you into trouble. I hunt in the swamp a good bit and the GPS will really mess you up sometime because it can give you the shortest path to a location. What it doesn't know is that your boat can't walk on high ground.
I have marked some spots on public that I don't hunt often, just as a reminder. Kinda neat to plug in the GPS coordinates into a imagery website and see where you went hunting 500 miles away, two years ago.
Bottom line is that I like them for fishing and marking areas of interest. They are not a substitute for a compass and/or common sense. If you get one, practice in areas you are familiar with before venturing into remote unknown locations.

Anatidae, I can't imagine why you would think I would have any knowledge of GPS units. I have never owned one and as long as my eyes hold up, I won't buy one.
I have been blessed with an excellent sense of direction. Can't say I've never been lost, but I have always found my way back.
My eyes are VERY dark brown, almost black, and I am one of those that HAS to wear sunglasses, or I will get severe headaches. Some years ago I learned not to follow a flashlight, they get more people lost than anything else. When you limit your area of sight to as far as your flashlight shines, you have seriously handicapped yourself.
I now carry a penlight for when I have to do intricate work, like break down a gun or work on the motor. I can still thread a hook and re-spool a reel in the dark. I forbid those going with me to shine thier flashlights unless they absolutly MUST have them.
This past season I was with a "friend" on a foggy morning, and I was going into our "hole" from a different direction for the first time due to the high water. I knew I was headed in the right direction by my compass, but my partner just couldn't stand it, he had to use his new Q Beam. I was driving the boat and this idiot was shining it all over, even right at me, blinding me. It was only then that I got turned around. What normally would have taken fifteen minutes ended up taking an hour, and we didn't find it until I threatened to throw him and his damn Q Beam overboard if he didn't turn it off.
I agree with you about the trees as markers. Back when I was a serious deer hunter, I learned that if you knew the woods you were hunting, and knew what grew where, that was more informative than a map and more useful than a flashlight.
As far as your question Cook&Nash, try about.com under global positioning units. There should be some sort of comparison.

..sorry, don't own one. I can feel your need to have one though. I have waded in and out of our spot bookoodles of times and gotten temporarily lost several times.
flooded timber in the swamp in the dark is not for rookies.
Best bet is a compass...that would have at least minimized our mistake.

'Captn T'....I certainly didn't intend the reference as a 'slight' of any kind, I assure you......We seem to share alot of the same views on a lot of things.
I guess I just assumed you might have used a GPS on some off-shore fishing ventures and would be familiar with their navigational benefits. Assumptions get me into trouble, everytime.

C&N: Here is the mother of all GPS sites:http://joe.mehaffey.com/
There is a ton of usefull GPS stuff there, reviews, etx. I have a Garmin GPS 12. It does ok for finding wrecks in the gulf, but it is hard to see the screen in the dark.

Certainly none taken, Anatidae......
When I was fishing the Gulf and the Everglades they were still using Loran. With the error due to continental drift and all (remember the Burmuda Triangle? Heard anything about it lately? ), I learned to use a sextant and trust the compass and if all that failed, I waited on the sun, moon or stars. They have gotten me out whenever I have been "turned around".
I have been aboard when other guides I know were using thier GPS, and it always seemed to be off, whether it be 20 yards or 200 yards. Still needed to troll around and find "the spot", so I haven't seen the use to get one. Kind of like riding along following the creek channels in a flooded lake by the dead timber instead of following a little gadget that will get you aground if you don't use your water savy.
I'll look hard at them when thier accuracy is closer to 10 yards.

The sun, the moon, the planets, the stars, the knotty willow, the majestic cypress, the stinky pile of logs, to one lone twig, the tree you saw the coon in, the bend of the channel, the lean of the trees, the color of the water, the squirrel nests, the bleached white dead tree, the muscadine vine, the beaver hut, and finally, the feathers.........
No batteries inlcuded, knock yourself out...
