STARKVILLE — Mississippi State has added Melvin Smith as an assistant coach on its football staff, spokesman Mike Nemeth confirmed.
Smith, a Magee native and Millsaps graduate, leaves his position as cornerbacks coach at Texas A&M, where he spent three seasons. His responsibilities at Mississippi State have yet to be determined.
The former MSU assistant from 1995-2001, Smith has never coached running backs. That is the position that became available when running backs coach Freddie Kitchens left to take a job with the Dallas Cowboys.
Smith, who has earned a reputation as a stellar recruiting, is a 23-year veteran in the coaching business. He also coached at Ole Miss from 1992-94. He was not immediately availabe for comment.
