Q for Dog Specialist

Postby Jim » Sun Jul 28, 2002 8:35 am

My dumb woman neighbor out here in the boonies has a black lab named Charter, never trained, beautiful dog and "The Boss" if you get my drift.

Tougher than a hickory stump but dumber than one too.
(Not really he smart but he jest don't know nuttin)

He likes to run with the truck to the duckhole and that didn't surprise me but yesterday I took off to walk some rocks, went a direction he never been before and ran gravel roads haulin boody to a spot that I clocked on the return trip at exactly 4 miles from the house.

30-40 minutes later that crazy dog scared me commin through the cotton at me!

I just about could not believe that he had found me that far from the house. Hell it took him over 30 minutes just to get there, he pees on my tires all the time, I was wondering if he followed his own scent trail to get back there on me because I cant figure out any other way in the world that crazy dog managed to find me. I was so far back in the bushes that it really stunned me when he showed up.

He had never been there, or nowhere close to there. I'd say the closest he ever was to that place was 3.5 miles. He was on virgin territory and he found me in the middle of a cotton field 4 miles away. That seems almost impossible to me. He had to using his own scent trail.

If not, how did he do that?

It made me think that all you got to do to make a silent trail as long as you want for you dog to find you is wear something that will shed his own pee scent on your feet and he can find you for miles and miles.

Going hunting somewhere that you would like some backup if something happens? (on land)

Well just teach the duck dog to find you, wear something that lets him do that, and when you don't show up at dark the ole lady just turns him loose and he will take them right TO you.

Is running 4 miles and finding me like that an unusual thing for dogs?

This dog is as tough as I have ever seen one. He can run 1.5 miles in swamp heat almost wide open and never flinch. I aint never seen nuttin like it. Too bad she didn't train him, he is as hard headed as you will ever see. But man is he is ever TOUGH.

You throw the ball he just goes "PPPFFFTT!"

Yeah RIGHT.........
