I got my band information back today.

Postby redwine » Wed Jan 25, 2006 9:02 am

I received my information from the banded greenhead I killed last week. He was banded in Otthon, Saskatchewan. He traveled over 1,700 miles before he was killed. What an interesting flight that must have been.

I killed a mallard a few years back that was also banded in Otthon, SK. That was a long flight, but the one that got me was a Green-wing Teal I killed this year. It was banded in Aug. 05 and killed in Nov. 05.
The teal was band in E. Mills Lake in the Northwest Territory. I went to Mapquest and got the distance, it was a little over 3250 miles.

Amazing they fly so far and in such a short time frame.

My wife killed a duck in '01 that was banded 7 mi E of Otthon, SK.

Banded in '97 by J F Voelzer of Portland OR.

I'm curious what the prefix on your band is......hers started with #1537.

That was one of the 3 bands she got in 2 days, that year  . 'Killed 2 banded ducks one day, then the first duck that she shot at the next morning was banded, also. She was due.

Here's one that is different than you might expect........while hunting on the SK / ND border this Oct., she killed a duck that was banded about 60 miles South of where she shot it....banded in August and was hatched this year. I've always read that they might travel North, to another area to molt or stage in a larger concentration of other drakes.

They (scientists) learn a lot from the banding and recovery data which is why it's important to report your band return data when you get one.

Congrats on the band......thanks for sharing the info......I always find it interesting.

Very interesting!

I enjoyed following the white-fronted geese that had satellite transmitters attached to them. Those dudes nest in the interior and north coast of Alaska and start heading south in July.

I've mentioned it before, but I saw one goose on the Canada/ US border one day and 2 days later was sitting on the Rio Grande River.

deredwine - that duck actually travelled 8500 miles if he was banded in 03...two and a half round trips.

someone mentioned E Mills Lake NT...I killed a greenhead banded there two years ago by Bollinger in 2003. 3200 miles! It was a first year bird.
