First time going Elk Hunting. Actually going in kinda blind to Wyoming. Not sure about anything yet, just know that im putting in for a group hunt with 2 other guys that have never been either. We havent been drawn yet. Have friends that live out there and they know someone that hunts every year. We are supposed to hook up with him so that will be our only hope of knowing what is going on. Im really not sure about anything, just wondering what it is like. I know its not gonna be anything like deer hunting here. Im curious about the terrain, how much walking do you do? Do you scout for a couple of days then hunt for a couple of days? How cold is it during Sept., Oct.? What kind of gear do I need, boots and such? Any advice will be appreciated.

I went a couple of years ago in the Grand Tetons just outside Jackson Hole, Wyoming.....and most of what you will do in Wyoming will be on horse back......even so, you should pack as much protein as possible....you will walk some, but not as much as you think....im gonna try and go back next year too, and if any one thing sticks out, that is it....bring high protein energy bars....

not to be a jerk but get in shape.. start walking now and over time increase distance speed and the weight your carring. You never know when you may be faced with walking out.

I have been going for aound 20 years.

WARNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You will be hooked for life.
If you already own bad habits you WILL obtain another!
Someone already told you first thing to do is get in shape, if you can run a mile down this way you might make 50 yards up there.

After that you have to decide if you wanna do it your self, which is what we do, or find a good guide. I have been on one guided hunt, one day I will do another guided hunt GOD willing. E-mail me or pm and I can give you alot more info, this is all in Colorado by the way.

Got a real good friend that guides in Springerville AZ in the White Mountains. Kills 350's consistantly every year. It borders the Indian reservation. Been out there 6 times myself. Killed a 370 one year and saw on a 400 inch, (got him on video), but he got poached the night before our hunt

Want more info PM me

If I am not mistaken I believe you MUST HAVE a guide to hunt in Wyoming if you are a non-resident. This may apply to "government woods" only. September is a month of changes in that area of the country. Early september will be like a nice fall day around here...late september will feel like a December day around here. In early season it will be in the high 30's (maybe) for a low...but probably in the mid 40's for lows, and in the mid 70's to around 80 for highs. There is very little humidity that I can remember, so it feels especially nice. Late September the lows will be in the 20's and highs in the 50's....as with anything this is just what I experienced when I went out there, and weather is a dynamic thing and it could be 90 in late september or 20 in early...those are just the norm's that I spoke of.
It's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

yeah smith, we went with a guide up there that my dad a bunch of local dentists friends of his have been using since the 70's.....the guys first name is Merrill....cant remember his last name, would have to ask my dad...but overall, i was hooked....i would recomend a guide if you dont have one...the way it works in wyoming national forests is a guide has rights to guide a certain thousand(s) of acres and no other guide can guide in that area, however, it is open to the public to hunt without a guide...and i will tell you, we had a group of hunters without a guide and our guide did everything possible to make sure they had no elk in the lower half of his area   ....as far as bein winded....i would say go out a couple days before hand and jog out there....i think its just a matter of getting used to the altitude and not so much as being able to run 10 miles at any given moment, at least that is what i did and i was ok....our guide was pushing 60 years old and smoked a pack of marlboro red cigarettes a day and could leap tall buildings in a single bound....pack for all weather out there....our first 6 days were 70s and dusty....last 5 days we had snow storms....also, you will get a little down time and all the streams have good trout fishing, so if you can bring a small rod or a fly rod do it....and bring some good bourbon and enough of it....liquor and beer laws around jackson hole and surrounding areas are a bit odd....also, while you are in jackson, you MUST visit the million dollar cowboy bar.....real cool, where the movie every which way but loose was filmed, or part of it....clint eastwood flick....

Don't start Elk hunting, you won't be able to quit. I hunt New Mexico ever year. Start planning you trip NOW!!!!!!!!! Get you body in the best shape its ever been in. You need to be able to walk 5 miles or more per day up hill in about 5,000 to 8,000 feet elev. Get you new boots now an get them broke in, before you go, Take you rifle to the range an find elk load that its like to shoot. Rember you may only get one shot so try shooting from a bi-pod, on your belly, try to avoid shooting standing up unsupported. Your shots may be from 50 yards to 300 yards. So get used to those distances. an last if you need another gun let me know, always want to try new places.

Get you a pair of Danners, and start walking. I swam every day for 3 months before my trip, and I was not ready. It made a couple of the days miserable. We were at 10,000 feet, and you really can't do anything to get ready for that. You should be in the best shape of your Life though, and then some. Good Luck

Do most people from here, ms. or the south in general, fly or drive out there. We are contemplating both.
