Roost shooting
Why does every one Roost shoot? to me its unethnical I mean theres no sport in it b/c you really don't need decoys, and you don't even have to call to them they just fly in and land. To me its just like jump shooting. I know most clubs will not allow it and most Fed. land doesn't allow it so I wish the WMA's would do away with it also. There is a WMA I use to like to hunt back home but Dumb asses have started roost shooting on it all the time and has ruined it. I know they have as much right to hunt there and to hunt any way they want to but why cant they wake their buts up early like the rest of us do and bust our ass off durring the off season and find their own places to hunt.

What's wrong with jump shooting?
Have you ever tried to sneak up on 100 mallards in a ditch? Most of the time they see you coming long before you get there and if you happen to slip in unseen, you'll be lucky to get a shot or two before they all fly away.
Roost shooting? Nothing unethical about it in my opinion. Unless you are shooting them after sunset and then it is very easy to take advantage of them.
And what is unethical about NOT using decoys? To me, not using decoys takes more skill than using them. Standing in knee deep water and calling and getting ducks to fly within shooting range is much more challenging than hunting over plastic decoys.
Most WMA's have gone to a 12 noon rule where you must quit hunting at noon. If they didn't, folks would hunt from daylight until dark 7 days a week the entire season.
But as a rule, shooting a roost too much will run birds off, so that's why lots of folks don't do it.

Roost shooting isn't just shooting past noon. I like to hunt all day where legal when I can. Public places with all day hunting can get messed up, especially with no new ducks. I know what you mean.
I don't think that many people hunt past noon though.
Right now, if I could whack a bunch at dark-thirty, I'd be there. This season is get 'em any way you can, (legally that is).

I think roost shooters are getting a little too caught up in body count. These birds are not going to stay around if they have pressure on them from daylight till dusk. I wish all of the WMAs would go to a 12:00 cutoff. You will find that most of these people that are roost shooting are taking more than their legal limit as well.

Duckkiller, you've made similar statements before. I just want to know what is wrong with going to a duck hole and being in the right place at the right time where you don't need to call or use decoys?
Don't take me the wrong way, I'm just curious? Shoot, I consider a hunt where no decoys or calling is needed to be the best of the best. Besides, when you're sitting on the X all you have to do is shoot.

You guys are misunderstanding what I was talking about. I was talking about what some guys were doing back home they go in and shoot way past dark and to me thats just wrong. I mean if you cant see to drive the boat out its too late to shoot. and these guys are killin 7-8 woodies a piece

I think everybody has a different idea of what roost shooting is. I think it is shooting after legal shooting hours at least that is what the game warden said the other day when he was telling us about hte four guys that got caught roost shooting that late on the refuge. They got a pretty nice ticket.

Yeah duckkiller you wouldn't be from Alcorn county would you. If not it sound like you are talking about it. We have a WMA that is good early in the season because the kids have not had a chance to push the ducks out by roost shooting. Who ever said the part about people getting caught up in a body count is right as well. These kids go to shoot up the world. They don't care about limits or shooting hours. Hell to me that is not hunting. That is shooting. I heard though one of my friends that a group went and knock down 56 woodies. What gets me is they want to know why we don't have ducks. I like the 12 oclock shut off. I will have to talk to my local Mr. Green Britches about that.

I am not saying anything is wrong with it I would love to get a limit with out needing a call or decoys what I was talking about is a guy back home who only hunts in the late afternoon (way after sunset) and kills 7-8 woodies a day. I like to sit in the blind as long as I can just like the rest of you but when it comes sunset time I pack up and go home instead of being like this guy who just keeps on shooting. Maybe I should have been more clear in my first post for that I am sorry but it just ticks me off when he thinks he can get away with it just b/c he is putting his boat in on private land. I guess he thinks the GW's cant find him that way. but that just shows how little he knows. I had a GW ask me about it b/c he new that I hunted the area in the mornings alot and I told him about it and he said that I wasn't the first to complain about the guy and that they were doing there best to catch him.

Oh, yes, certainly. You are talking about shooting late. Definitely illegal and unethical....that's the reason shooting hour ends at sunset. After that, ducks get stupid and very vulnerable and are easy pickin's.
Those late gunshots can be heard for miles when everything else is quiet. Come about 5 o'clock every day, I just park and listen.

I can vouch for him on this one!

I would think late shooters would be the easiest to catch.
And I suspect most late shooter citations also qualify for wanton waste, since there's no way they find much of what they shot in the dark.
