puppy issue....
puppy issue....
ya'll hear the spill before, so i'll spare ya.
trapper's 15 wks old and has done nothing more than learn to be a decent "citizen"....
hand thrown marks for the most part and the occasional bird boy thrown mark -- nothing over about 60 yds......and that's rare, generally more in the 20-30 yd range.
anyhow, had this issue creep up last night -- ya'll ever notice how BAM one day they just 'decide'?
small double hand thrown from me, same place every morning and evening, but last night the lil turd runs to the "go" bird, right over it, and heads back for the memory.......goes right to it, blinks it, and burns back for the memory....
i didn't let him get either -- he doesn't understand "fetch" that one trapper.
quit w/ the double (didn't push) last night.....tried again this morning, same thing.
i should say, he's LOVING retrieving, so in MY mind, right now -- no biggie.....i'm just gonna throw nothing but singles for a while....
BUT, i'm a bit concerned as to whether this could lead to other aversions later on...................
thoughts?

p.s. have i said how i LOVE not having that edit feature here?
p.s.s a word on the double...........180 apart, so he had to run by me to get to it, so he didn't get either....the memory was the same mark as the "singles" previously.........so, THAT might be why he's so sure to go back there.

I would not think a couple of times would create a habit. But at the same time I would not continue it so that I didn't create a habit. You still got plenty of time.
If I did do doubles, it would be 180 degree with a check cord.

well, thing is....they ARE 180. and the check is a no go b/c he's coming back, just w/out the danged bumper
i mean this sucker is running out to it, likety split, over it, and coming back happy as can be......ready for the memory....
so "tug tug" will just get him back w/out the bumper quicker..............hehehe
i got this sneakin suspicion that gauge was just here to soften me up and trapper's gonna drive the nails in the dam coffin

Don't fill to bad Gator,
At 15 weeks my pup was doing 200yrd marks, 100 yrd blinds, triples, deversions, and walkups.
. So you ain't got to muck more work to do
.
Man i'm sure you gonna have one hell of a pup. I'll tell you one thing that my pup didn't have a that age, was the socializing with other people and other dogs. That's a big plus in my book that "trapper" does have.
Oh yea, my pup really didn't do all that

Memories, the dogs make them all the time, sometimes they just slow the learning process down. Try changing the look of the drill. JMO
Pearl started acting funny over the weekend too. All she wanted to do was water retrieves or land with canvas bumpers. I finally got her to pick up all the marks I threw (about 20-25 yards). Monday afternoon I got to looking at her, and guess what, she’s loosing teethe. She was missing 6 teethe. She’s only a week older than Trapper, so maybe this could be his problem too.

memory
Without an OB foundation which our pups don't have yet its seems hard to do doubles. I consider the value of doubles early on as a way to develop memory. I don't think your going to really do much to establish the mechanics of a double early on but you can build memory.
I have a pup the same age and doubles are like a dang goat ropin' Instead of doubles right now I'm doing an occasional memory drill where I drop a bumper and lead him away and then turn him back around 40 yds away, let him lock on the "memory bird" and send him. Seems like it will accomplish some of the same goals as doubles?
Just a thought......

bill, i wancha to know, man i preciate ya...
you're exactly right too....i've been kickin this whole thing around all morning -- not outta frustration -- but just to take stock of what i'm wanting "at this point".......
- love to retrieve ---- check
- decent lil citizen ---- check
- puppy OB down fairly well --- check
- socialization --------------check
man, that little drill sounds like it's just what the doctor (pun intended) ordered.....takes the desire for the other bumper out of the equation, and still gets a lil "memory" accomplished........THANKS
troy and i just talked and me and him both were chalking it up to a "desire" issue and that i shouldn't "discourage" too much -- which i didn't.....this sheds a whole new light on it too.....again MUCH THANKS....
