What does it take to spend $1399+tax?!
Went straight over to Mean Mallard today, wanted to spend my money with the local guys, to buy some Hevi-Steel and a new Beretta Xtrema II or an SBE II. Got to the store around 1:10 in the afternoon and the gun area lights were already turned off. The guy behind the gun counter was on the phone. While looking at the guns the only thing I got out of him was him yelling, while on the phone, "Yahoo, we get out of here in 10 minutes!" Another sales person yelled back from some other part of the store, "No, we do not leave until 1:30." Ok, no biggie. I am staring at the guns from across the counter and another guy is looking at some pistols in the counter. Still no one asks if I need any help looking at a gun.
With the lights about to go out and the doors about to shut I pay for my Hevi-Steel and a thermos. No biggie, I will just hit Bass Pro on the way home after the wife and I go to Miskelley's.
Hit Bass Pro and they are pretty much swamped, but I am fine with this. So, with only one thing in mind I head upstairs and make my way to the gun counter. I am standing there and no one ask if I need any help. Two guys are standing to my left approximately 7 feet from me and they ask to see the SBE II. Ok, no biggie. They then ask to see the Xtrema II. I mention that I too would like to see the gun as this is the only one in the store, but there are four SBE II's. After the guy to my left holds up the weapon to his shoulder the salesman then takes the weapon to place it back in the gun rack. The guy to my left looks a bit bewildered as I had just mentioned that I too would like to see the gun, but the salesman just ignored my words. I think to myself, "Ok, maybe he didn't hear me." So, I say "Sir, I like that Xtrema II, how much is it?" You know, giving him the hit. He says, "I think it is $1200. No, I am sorry, the tag says $1300." That was it. Nothing else was said, no offer to see the gun, NOTHING!
That is fine, I will spend my money elsewhere because it is evident that niether one of these stores wanted my money on this day.

Ran into the same thing at Bass Pro in Atlanta. I had approx. $700+ in the buggy and asked about the fast grass they had on sale. A sales person told me to see the guy at the gun counter. I went to see him and he told me it was in the back and to give him a minute and he'ld get it for me. Well I waited about 20min. and asked again. He told me it was his break time and he'ld get someone else to get it. SO, I waited another 15min. and asked the new person at the gun counter about it and they told me they were busy and could I wait. I was with my wife and she frowns when I create a scene - so I pushed my buggy up to the register and let them ring it up and then asked to speak to a manager. Had to wait 10mins. for him. I explained everything that happened and politely told them where they could stick there store and that I'ld order it from Cabelas. They asked for my name, address, and home number so someone could call me and clear it up. They never called. Since then I've never bought anything else from Bass Pro.
What we have here is a good example of the fact that STUPID people can get a job. Some stupid people even get to be store managers
Gary's in Columbus and West Point is just as bad. Unless you are homies with the guys who man the counter, get ready for POOR service. I tried to by a gun in the WP store last year to no avail. I asked them to order a gun...guy says "yeah, it'll be here on thursday". Get back there on thursday(three days later) and i seems fat boy forgot to order it and didn't even remember me
Yep, I've been there too. I guess that's just the state the world is in these days.

Screw bass pro. If I never set foot in another bass pro, I'll be happy. Ive been tickled since the first time I walked into sportsman warehouse. The fact they support Southern Flight & other causes in their local comminties is simply a plus.
I aint beggin anyone to take my money. Sadly, I think a scene is what is needed these days to make people notice $#!+ service. travis

its like that at one point or another in every
hunting store i have ever been in.
In the past year i have prob spent $3000 in mean
mallard and $2000 in Hadads in vicksburg. I will not
go to bass pro. I went this past week just to say
that i had been there. didn't buy anything just basically
wanted to look at all the mounts.
The gray haired big guy behind the gun counter at
mean mallard is a D**KHEAD. I have seen him run
customers out of the store by being rude to them. IF he would
have talked to me the way he talked to these two
gentlemen that day I think I would have to say something, but
it wasn't any of my business so i let it be.
my advice is to find one person in every hunting store you
frequent and befriend them. An owner or mgr. if possible.
I don't even talk to anybody else after i make the connection
w/ somebody in the store. They are the only ones who know what
the heck they are talking about anyway.

Do your research before you go. Go to buy not to shop. Hunting good stores are used to dealing with men.... who ususally don't want a lot of asskissing or handjobbing. If you need this then try shopping at Victoria's Secret. I'm not saying that Drakeshead is whinning by any strech of the imagination. IF you are going to drop >1K the someone should try and help by all means. Better luck at Van's. They do real go business. The only other thing that has ever helped me is to call ahead and try and talk to someone who know what the hell they are doing (if possible). That way when you walk in and say "I spoke to Blackduck this morning about !@#$%" Blackduck will know you mean business. Good luck and get the ExtremaII

I agree with you, but Chris was not there. I went to Mean Mallard from the get go because of how Chris runs his business and has always been helpful. Unfortunately when he was not around, they lost a sale.
Blackduck,
I wanted to shoulder both guns, one after the other, to see which one I really liked the best. Personnally I do not think I was asking too much. I was not looking for @sskissing, just someone to let me see the gun. I really did not mind waiting to see the gun, but only wanted someone to acknowledge that I was there and to give them a few minutes and they would be right over to help. No one said a word.
This is exactly why you should make friends with someone with an FFL who will order for you. I never have to deal with gun counter people who are always FOS and know nothing substantive about the guns, and you get the exact gun you want, not what some manager who never shoots other than at doves once a year thinks that you need.

so the first thing that you do is knock his business on the net without giving him a chance to solve your problem....

No, the first thing I did was pass up several hunting stores while driving from Vicksburg to Ridgeland to do business with his store. Because he was not there I guess that gives his employees the right not to have proper customer service? If so, I would rather he put HIS hours on the front door or his web site so that I know when to head to Ridgeland to shop at HIS store, Mean Mallard.
I did buy items from Mean Mallard that did not require any assistance from his service personnel, such as a Buck Gardner goose call, an Avery thermos and two boxes of Hevi-Steel. Mean Mallard, and then Bass Pro, would have also gotten the sale of a new shotgun had their personnel assisted me.
