If you could only hunt over 12 decoys and why?
I would pick
8 coots, 2 drake ring necks,and 2 hen mallards
The coots to make it natural, the ring necks to grab attention, and the hens because most all hens look the same.

Twelve black 2 liter bottles and bein' in the right spot! Actually I don't really care, whatever twelve I would grab out of the bag would suit me fine. I don't think species make that big a difference.

5 mallard hens, 3 mallard drakes, and 2 pairs of pintails. I think that the ducks are attracted to the white in the drake pins because they can see it farther.

Eleven of most anything made by G&H, and one Drake Pintail. I know guys so weird about having the Drake Pintail in the spread, that they will run 2 miles back to the camp just before first light if they left the Bull Sprig behind. They won't hunt without it. Of couse they're from Bama....

My hands would be shaking violently from setting such a teeny, tiny spread...
But here goes. 9 greenhead deeks, 1 hen, 1 moto, and a big hootchie bird decoy...
Or, a dozen of my monstor honker keeless floaters (nessies). travis

Why would you put coots in your spread. They will swim up anyway and just hang around for awile and then they really make it look real.haha

Hmmmm.... I usually use 2-3 dozen, but here it is:
6 mallards, 4 hens and 2 drakes
2 wood ducks
2 greenwing teal
2 pintails
I like a variety of dekes since more species of ducks fly flooded fields.

If I am limited to this I would just take one of any kind. Then I would stand out in the water with it and act like I was leaving. From my vast knowledge of ducks this is when they really like to come in anyway.LOL

I would have to go with:
8 mallard hens
2 green heads
1 pair pintails
gotta keep the groups segregated a bit too...............

I agree with Jeff, I think people put way to much stock in specific species. If they float and have a line and weight then I'm using them. My decoys spread is probably comprised of 8 different species, 5 brands, ranging from 2 thru 15 years old. Hell, I feel good if I can get through a hunt without having any sink.
Now, if I'm buying a new dozen, which I rarely do, I'll buy your regular G&H mallard drake/hen mix.

Well, if I hadto use 12 (no more, no less.... and keep in mind, we hunt the 'river', I'd use 11 honkers and 1 'suzie'. 'Wife would probably want 6 suzies/6 g-heads.
I'm like some others, here....'don't usually use les than 2 doz.....sometimes as many as 8 doz. (depending on the circumstances)....so, if the birds respond better to a small spread, I'd probably just use 4 suzies/2 g-heads. the mallards would be my choice, only i would use 9 or 11... supersticious about using even number of dekes.. i like 3, 6 or 9 or odd numbers... don't ask me why... just the way i am.. i have been known to shoot an even numbered deke to get it out of sight....
