Custom Built (homeade) boat blind

Postby Deadeye » Mon Jun 10, 2002 1:31 pm

Fella's,
It's been awhile since I've been out here reading, but hunting season will be coming soon!!!! I am planning on building a blind on my 14ft boat and wanted to see if there were some part time engineers on this site who would have some good advice? I'm in the Jackson area (Resevoir) and would like to see some blinds that you have built if possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

best thing to do is to call avery and tell them that you ordered a blind and it came w/o assembly instructions...they will send you the blue prints....take the blue prints and copy their blind!! or just get the blueprints from someone who has the avery blind...i did it and spent around $330 w/ material and all..that included welding and stuff!!!

fun project!!! dont miss it at all!!!

good luck!!

I've never built one but have always wanted to try using the hinges and poles that hold the canopy over a pontoon boat. If I'm not mistaken both canopy poles work off one pair of hinges. If you had two sets of them and cut them down so they would be narrow enough for you duck boat, you should be able to rig a blind that folds open from the middle to the front and back of the boat. I would cover with camo netting so you could see through.

Fella's,

Those are two good ideas, but the canopy idea sounds interesting. I don't know if I've ever seen a pontoon boat canopy though. I may have to go to a boat dealer and look at one.

Thanks for the input.

There is a guy in Greenwood named Burt Flemming that custom builds the pop up blinds like the Avery, but it is less that half price and is all welded with no bolts and a better made blind. He has been building them for 20 something year. It would be worth your time to call and talk to him. Burt's number is 662-453-2402

I'll second the motion on Burt Flemming's blinds. From what I understand, Avery based alot of their design on his blind.

The late Avery Wood came up with the idea of the fold down blind about 35 years ago. He had an engineer from the Greenwood area to design and build it. When his son Tate Wood when in to business with what is now Avery Outdoor, he had the concept modified to fit any size boat. Hunters in the Greenwood area have been using that type blind for over 30 years. Burt Flemming custom builds them here in Greenwood. My old boat has one of Burt's blinds on it and it is over 15 years old with no maintenance problems at all. They are a much better built blind than the Avery Quickset at less than half the cost.
