Barges and bridges

Postby Wingman » Thu May 30, 2002 7:09 pm

What's going on these days? We all know about the bridge on the Arkansas in Oklahoma, but the bridge at Greenville has been hit twice in one day. I heard that it got hit again this morning at 4:30. I wonder if the high water level and the current have anything to do with it..surely they do.
A few years back, I was hauling corn over to Lake Village. The elevator is up under the bridge, right on the river bank. A bunch of us were standing in line waiting and one guy told a story about a barge hitting the bridge and sinking. They sent divers down to put ballasts under the barge to raise it. The divers came up after a while and started taking off their diving gear. One of the divers told everybody that he wasn't going back down; there he didn't care if the barge stayed down there forever. He said there were cats bigger than he was at the base of those pilings! I don't believe I'da gone back down either.

Barges and bridges

My old college room mate was a diver for the ACOE and he said the same thing about the cats on Arkabutla right after he told them he quit. He compared the head and eyes of the cats to the hood of a volkswagon.

Hey,
I heard some people talking at the leeve board and they said the current is pulling the barges into the bridge. Sounds like to me they would ban the barges until the current slacks off. Once is an accident twice is too much for me.

I've heard the big fish story about every body of water in the south. Been hearing it for 20 years. I knew it was coming when I read "they sent divers down".

It's kinda like black panther stories. It just won't go away.

My 2 cents

Ahh...so there are no big fish. Ever seen a sturgeon? Have you ever seen a molecule?

Yes, there are big fish. There may even be a black panther. Who am I to question WINGMAN?

we have Giant Cats at Pickwick and Wilson dam that has been witnessed by divers...{sure} one incedent was a cat as big as a car in Hatchie River... come too find out is was a car along with 7 others that were dropped by a chop shop....haha.....

no doubt there are cats over the 100 lb range... and the world record holds at 100-plus... if you see a cat as big as the Judge, we have problems......ha....
