I read about this on Realtree's website yesterday. It's obviously becoming more of an epidemic. It's kind of scary because there are some imported elk in several places in Ms. I know of one place off of I-20 between Jackson and Vicksburg.

Mad Deer Disease

I could be wrong, but I think I remember my father telling me about a farmer/taxidermist in Mississippi who last year (maybe year before last) was diagnosed with and (I think) later died from Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease which is the human form of Mad Cow. Specualtion was that he may have contracted it from processing an infected deer.

Does this sound familiar to anybody? I wish I could remember the details a little better.

The article was probably dramatized more than necessary, but it sure is a scary situation!

There was even a special on FOX about a month ago, it is just not talked about much down here, b/c no cases have been reported yet. You let it get into the big domestic ranches of texas, and then the shi....will definatly hit the fan. Maybe then the funding will actually come through to properly investigate this disease.

It seems that Colorado, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Wyoming, Minnesota, Illinois and other state are becoming more concerned about it. Biologists first recognized it in 1967.

Here is some additional information, this first link is from Colorado Division of Wildlife.

Link to chronic wasting disease

Link to Wisconsin Dept. of Natrual Resources

If you will go to MDWF forum, their is a post about this in Mississippi Link to MDWF Deer Forum

I have seen a buck deer with this diease. I was in a tree stand a couple of years ago when a doe crossed a trail about 30 yds from me. Well being I hadnt killed one that year yet i decided too put her down. One shot from the ole 50 cal laid her out. I started to get down and check her out. As i was climbing down I hear the awfulest racket coming towards me. I stopped climbing and waited too see what was comming. A big buck was comming hard and fast the same way the doe had come head down and grunting like crazy. He had his little wanker run out as he approached the doe. I guess he finally figured she was dead and then he turned and looked @ me. The hair raised up on his back and he started stomping and pawing the ground, snorting and wheezing blowing snot bubbles from his nose.............................................................................................................................................. Now that was a MAD deer!!!!!

hehehehehehe Just figured i'd lighten things up a bit LOL

Do you know why PMS is called PMS?
Because the term MAD COW was already taken.

funny how deer adapt to certain regions and avoid any disease... yet bring in a deer from out of area to Ms. and they will succumb to Blue Gum disease every time... Tolerance, Tolerance, keep the fences down and let them be... better yet, buy a big buck and shoot him in the trailer...
