Black Oil Sunflowers, small black seed, should be available at a co-op.
I use a two row planter and plant them in one direction then I cross plant them.

They grow about four feet in height.

Striped sunflower seed is larger than black oil sunflower, but black oil seeds have thinner shells and a higher percentage of fat content per weight. Studies show that birds prefer the black oil to the striped varieties.

The Black-Oil Sunflower Seed is one of the most attractive seeds to many birds for 3 reasons:

High meat-to-shell ratio
Nutritious and high in fat
The small size and thin shells make them easy for small birds to handle and crack.

I planted two hoppers of the black oil, and 6 hoppers of peridovic. We'll let the doves taste-test them

what is the drop dead date for getting them in the ground? I hope I haven't missed it but I can't get coordinated with my farmer.

Info I've read says maturity is 100-130 days. That means anything not planted now is gonna be close. I'd like to have them ready by August 15th. I ran into planting problems, too. Just got them planted Monday. Might miss opening weekend, but we'll see.

I dont know wingman I read in the paper yesterday that the season may start on Sept. 6 this year. Aug 31 is on a Sat. and federal law prohibits hunting migratory birds until Sept. 1, so starting it on that on Sunday or Labor Day will be the other options.

got my first sunflowers in the ground yesterday.. i planted the black oil seed and tried a new plot in a hybrid 66.... i probably fell for a sales-pich of the year...haha.... they have a spray available that can be applied to the flowers that will make them dry up and drop prematurely... also if you plant them on hill ground they tend to run their course and dry up early due to heat. heads ain't as big but after all, we going to bush-hog them for the birds, not trying for a harvest record...
i like to plant in strips 40 ft. wide and as long as your field will go, leave a stip of grasses that you can later mow and disc for a mixture of wheat, oats and clover... then repeat with a stip of grain sorgrum.. offering a variety is the key for all wildlife... your plots will provide for deer, quail, turkey and rabbits as well...

PS. i'll let you know if it works.. had a Bioligist come and lay it out.. sounds good anyways...

well, since this is my first time to do a dove field by myself, let me ask some stupid questions...do most of ya'll broadcast or plant them in rows...if ya'll broadcast, how do you keep the weeds from overtaking the sunflower...lastly, i see were most bush-hog the sunflowers before season, is this to give the doves a clean area to feed and should you cut the whole thing or a little at a time (it would seem a little at a time would allow for a longer period of actually having sunflowers to hunt over)...any thoughts? justin

with a HOG cookin in order i will be there to offer any help....haha... the reason i leave strips in between food plots is to have a place to disc and provide dirt {or a clean place} for the birds to lite... these strips will be of wheat, oats and clover.. just make sure to not over seed original plots of sunflowers or millet... you can get in alot of trouble for this... Farming, YES.... providing for the wildlife ...Yes... good luck fellows....

judge jb

don't try to stretch the limit of a Proper field.... stay in the guide-lines and have a good hunt...

If possible, I cut strips before the season to allow doves to gather in the area. But make sure of the game laws. I leave several areas uncut in my field.

I put out 1/2 lb/acre of Zorial. Gonna see how that does, might have to come back with something over the top later. Mixed that with some liquid fertilizer, sprayed it at dinner today, raining now so it was perfect. You can go with Zorial/Cotoran/Prowl tank mix; check on the other post about sunflowers to get the rates.
