help settle an argument

Postby the doctor » Mon Nov 14, 2005 6:30 pm

a buddy and me are debating over what it takes to win a division title in the nfl

he says it is based on verall record, while I maintain that it is the best record within the division...ie a team could theoratically go 6-10 being undefeated within its respective division and win the title

those that make the playoffs are as follows

1,2,3, and 4 division champions and the 5 and 6 are the wild cards which are based on over all record

I have searched the net with no real success only to find articles outlining past situations where this could have occured...a division champion in the playoffs with a losing record

just like MLB if i'm not mistaken... total wins and losses, if there is a tie, it goes to divisional wins and losses...
Sun rise in the east.... and it sets up in the West, yes the sun rise in east baby, and it sets up in the west..... It's hard to tell, hard to tell, hard to tell, which one, which one I love best.....

I couldnt really find any concrete answers but I did find several articles about the NFC in the past where there was a possibility of a team with a losing record going to the playoffs

dont think it has ever happened though

You have probably heard them talking about this year. It is possible that a team with a losing record is going to the playoffs. That is because the entire division sucks. They go on ovewrall record, so you can be 10-4 and 2-4 in the division and you will beat out a 9-5 team that is 6-0 in the division. Best record goes.

thats what I thought...in your scenario the 10-4 team will likely get a wildcard
