Just about every thing I do is based on how I was raised. Like Goosebruce, I never really thought about group bagging until a couple of years ago. Neither did the guys I hunt with. We had one game hog (claimer) in our group of four, but we all knew who actually killed what. It really didn't make any difference who killed what to the other three of us, because we weren't competing against each other anyway. However, we still shot our way toward the limit as a group (really didn't happen that often). A couple of years ago we had been perusing the federal laws, and it became obvious to us that it is actually illegal, so we stopped and started making an effort to keep up with our individual ducks.
The only gray area we have is shooting feathered or winged birds (I know they're all feathered and winged, by the way, I'm talking about cripples). If one of my buddies cripples a bird in the air and I think it has a chance of getting away, I'll do my best to bring him down, even if I already have my limit. If the GW was watching and decided to write me up, because technically I killed the bird, then so be it. I feel a pretty strong responsibility not only to my cripples, but also to the groups'.
Anyway, I think it's commendable that you have an ethic and will stick to it. I don't think I would pass up a good hunt, though, because you can still practice your ethics. Make it clear that you will shoot your ducks and no one else's, and also don't want anyone shooting your ducks. If they don't invite you back, so what? You almost didn't go with them anyway. Who knows, you might even have a positive influence on them.

A question I have had for some time.....
Alot of honest folks posted on this topic and I'm not saying what's right and wrong, because each individual's situation is different. 'Just a matter of what you allow or tolerate, for whatever reason.
If I shot one of my wife's birds, I'd never hear the end of it. She gives me 'the look' (ya'll 'seen that......'know what it means, too, don't ya?) if I shoot one of her cripples on the way down, if I thought it was too healthy and might get away.
When I go hunting, I don't want somebody depriving me of what I went out there to do in the first place.....that's stealin' in my book, and I don't take too kindly to it.
There's a guy and his boy that hunt with us, occasionally and we like'em well enough to tolerate a certain degree of 'sloppiness'. Ya know...a little late, 'motor wouldn't crank, talkin' too loud, 'can't keep the dog in the boat, dog won't sit still or come-in when she's called, too little camoflage, decoys that drift outa the spread....all the annoying things that don't help you kill ducks.
They hunted with us, twice last year. The 1st day they were downwind of our boat on the birds' approach lane and limited-out before they let a bird thru. I mean our boats were touching! Well, 'next day we tried to get outa them hunting with us, but they were at the ramp, waiting. We picked a spot (after much debate....mind you they went with US) and I made sure they were up-wind, this time. 'Didn't phase'em a bit! We waited for ducks to get in range where everyone could get a good shot, but they came-up blasting across in front of us, before the birds really got in range for Anne and me.
Oh, she was super-pissed! 'Told'em that was their LAST HUNT, with us.
I can see, sittin' in a 5-man pit and ducks all over the place how hard it would be, NOT to double-pluck the same bird as someone else. But, what's the rush? Why is it so improtant to limit-out and get back to the camp in such a hurry? I would think the 'pit boss' would designate who shoots, when and tell the others to either call or film the action. Ain't NO way you can pick-out the bird 'in front of you' (everytime) if you've 2 guys on each side of you, unless everybody has hunted together alot, and knows how to avoid 'double-hits'.
Don't shoot 'my birds' 'cause I'm not about to shoot 'yours', unless I'm backin' you up on a cripple.....and that's only if you either tell me to, or your gun's empty.

Nothing stops a claimer faster than tellin them to sit down after 4 mallards... Nothing.
No we have done the oppostie at times too. Sometimes robert & I like to pick on my brother (if you knew rob you'd pick on him too), and we've been known to purposefully kill his ducks in front of him! hehe. Theirs no misteak he didnt shoot em, he just doesnt know if it was robert or me who did it. Finally after us doing this planned every so often, rob institued the 'I got a end' thingy, so he aint in middle of us. When its the three of us, its easy, robert shoots candy duck, rob and I each go to work on our side. I like hunting with folks like stano, stano goes to work on HI ducks, neve rhave to worry bout shooting the same bird, cause he makes a point to shoot at what somebody else wouldnt. Ducks dont seem to be as bad as gooseys, cause everyone is swinging for a boss, and thats causes problems of its own. Lo and behold a necktie dont ever come in, cause me and robert both will be shooting it long after itd dead on the water, to aruge bout who's band it is. Lost the last band flip on a goose I was in, next one is gonna be settled by a wrasting match! travis
