Jap millet

Peewee,
I have found some for $14.50 a bag (50lb). I plan on ordering some in June to be planted the first of July. Let me know if you have found any that is cheaper. If you need some just touch base with me. We planted Proso last year for dove, ducks and quail. I don't know if it is the same as pearl (white) millet. I have heard people say it was the same. It did fine. I can't say it did any better than the brown top or Jap. You won't see me planting alot of brown top for ducks. The black birds eat it all before the ducks get a chance to. The site does make a difference on if/when the black birds will show up.

Peewee, do you have any barnyardgrass in the particular spot where you are planting the Jap? If so, save your money and don't buy the Jap...same thing(cousins). Most wet areas in the delta will have barnyard.

SB I will be getting with you about that seed.

Wingman I dont know for sure if I have it. I do know I have plenty of Kucleburs (I guess that is how it is spelled). The camp is putting a couple holes in beans, I just want to make some low profile supplemental plots if you know what I mean. Keep your eyes closed uncle walt. PeeWee, cocklebur, to be correct... Jap millet can be fantastic with the right conditions, but always remember, the native grasses is what has brought them there in the past before you hunted, fetilize and promote your native grasses... same goes for all wild-life habitat... any thing extra is like a shoneys salad bar.... may want to space your jap millet planting dates a week or so apart... then you are bound to hit it right.... good luck....

Well, native grasses supply ducks with alot of nutrition that they need. If you are just gonna plant some jap to plant it, then I'd leave the native grasses alone. You will more than likely have sprangletop, smartweed, barnyardgrass, nutsedge and others. I've found that by disrupting these native grasses to plant a food plot, most of the time some other weed(like coffeeweed) comes up and shades the place. Only time I like to disrupt the native grasses, is if I can plant something like corn, beans or rice, and I'm positive that the crops will grow in the hole I put them in. Kinda wasteful to disc up a spot and nothing grow when you coulda left it alone. But everyone has their theories
