stop bank running??? My male dog is the worst I ever seen, alot of that can be attributed to the fact that he's not a fully trained duck hunter, he's more of a pet and I been training him to blood trail, BUT he still loves to retrieve and swim...HOWEVER, I can't take him out and work with him cause soon as I give him one retrieve he runs up and down the bank that a wild idiot with the bumper or duck trainer....I don't want to work and work him and turn him into a champion retriever, but he has champ bldlnes and I'd like him to at least bring me back the bumper and do some retrieves just to work and have fun....the bank running is BS and it pisses me off....also, he doesn't do this on dry land, he brings it right back to me! only at the pond...

Find some one to train with and each of you get on opposite side of the pond. and throw remote marks. If he attempts to run the bank the person who is close to him makes him get into the water.
Running the bank is just a sign that he is a smart dog and has figured out the easiest way to make the retrieve. It will not take long for him to learn that he should swim out and back.

No, I think you misunderstood. I will heel him at my side and throw the bumper or duck or ball or whatever it is...he goes get it and when he get back to the bank he runs up and down the bank with the bumper in the edge of the water....won't come back to me with it...he splashes around and plays with it...and he really is a pretty obedient dog, but I can't make him stop that, especially when my female is there too...he is just a TURD about it! I can walk away like I am going back to the truck and he follow me and I can get it back, BUT I don't wanna do that I want him to bring it back to me and stop all that foolishness!!! And what I was saying is, that like out in a field or my yard, he'll retrieve all day no troubles, brings it right back to me and sits down ready to go again...that's what I want him to do in the water retrieves, I don't want a pro field test dog, but I wanna be able to take him out and play with him and work with him and excercise him and all that, but he acts the fool at the pond!
[quote]He knows it, works, except at this time....he actually is trained to "HERE" and 2 short whistle blows...both the same to him...
Dog pretty obedient and obedience trained...I really have no trouble with him, except this....
If he knows the command and CHOOSES to disobey then you have to enforce it if you want to cure the problem. If he won't recall everytime he is not obedient.

He is right. This is a basic obedience issue.
Looking for 2 duck calls from Dominic Serio of Greenwood (ones for Novacaine)

If he is not coming when given the COMMAND here. He is not obedient. I don't care what the distraction is HERE means HERE. If he is not doing it on a retrieve, then you need to do a lot more basic obedience training. You have to have the basics locked in stone if you expect him to do what YOU want and not what HE wants. Hope this helps.

Yeah, I know what you mean...I have worked and worked to the point I got him on a rope with the obedience commands! And when he gets to that pond he loses his mind! I don't know, I gotta figure out something to break it...

Yeah, I am thinking about that!!! I had to do the shock thing to keep him in the yard when I was at work...that worked like a charm!!!!
Collar intro, collar condition, reinforce "here" with collar. Do these things in a very methodical and deliberate way and your problem should be solved. Unless your dog hasn't been properly force fetched. You may encounter some problems with "here" if he hasn't been properly FF'd. He may drop the bumper and run like a rocket to get to your side. This is one of the unpardonable sins. NEVER allow your dog to come back to you, during a retrieve, with nothing in his mouth. If he does this, and hasn't been FF'd, you will have no foundation in which to correct him. There is a method to the madness.

If you are not using a collar use a checkcord. Practice with the checkcord on land a while first cause it can be a mess in the water. You have to practice and plan where the rope is going to be before you send the dog.
Basically you time it just like a collar. Instead of HERE NICK HERE its HERE JERK HERE.
I would stop water retrieves and get control of that behavior on land really well using a check cord and then go back to water with the cord.
