Ducks Unlimited-vs-Delta Waterfowl

Postby Don Miller » Wed Apr 24, 2002 9:30 am

I have been a member and sponsor of DU for many years. It seems to me that DU does a good job with their conservation work, but has become less and less hunter friendly, while Delta Waterfowl does do good consevation work as well and totally supports the ethical duck hunter. I also agree with Delta Waterfowl's stance on predidation of nesting ducks. If it weren't for the duck hunter DU would fold. I would like to see Delta Waterfowl start chapters in the southeast just as DU has. Competition for the duck hunters support could be a good thing. In your opinion, which group does more for the waterfowl and the waterfowl hunter with the resources (money) availible. I would like to here everyones opinion.

Delta is starting chapters all over the southeast. If there is not a chapter in your area go to the Delta Website and get in touch with them. I did and I can tell you they are great to work with.
PM me if you wnat to talk more about how to get started.
One of the things I love about Delta is that it is part of their chapter framework that 25% of all the money raised by a chapter is kept by that chapter for local projects in habitat or youth hunting programs.

Almost didn't answer your question.

Delta is the only one of these two that puts the preservation of hunting rights right in their mission statement. That says alot.
But DU is great at what they do, preserving wetlands. NOTE: preserving wetlands, not preserving ducks or duck hunting.
Delta is beginning what I hope will be a huge growth period. We will see what they do as they grow. As for now they are one of the few orgs. that has been willing to talk straight and ask the hard questions. On top of that since I started working with them they have been very responsive to my needs in getting a local chapter stated and answering my countless questions about habitat conditions and the future of our great tradition.
Interestingly enough at last count 97% of Delta members were also DU members, so I guess it is not realy an either-or question.

DU probably has a louder voice in the congress just because of their size and lobbying efforts. Both are good for a lot of different aspects of waterfowl and land resources.
I say support both of them or not it doesn't matter. They both have their jobs to do...

Have to agree w/Wingman. DU is "IMO" about preserving the wetlands, but a lot of wining & dining takes place. I want someone that will take a stand for the duckhunter and the best interest for the ducks. Not someone worried about if they look good w/their high $$$$ guns and their leases that couldn't be bought with a kings ransom. That is what most of DU comes across to me as.

Let's beat this dead horse one more time. Without the wetlands, you have no ducks and consequently, no more duck hunters and Delta Waterfowl is out of business. (I hope and pray that I will never have to resort to furry creatures with horns for winter entertainment!) Without duck hunters, there will be no more DU, so a great deal of wetland protection efforts will collapse, both in the field and in the legislature, resulting in fewer ducks. If we have a decline in ducks, hunters and wetlands, all of us are going to suffer. I don't think that it has to be an us against them mentality...my wallet will provide support to both groups and some others as well!

Support'em both, from what it costs to join both of them, that is like a drop in the bucket compared to what you spend each duck season on shells, guns, decoys, etc.... Bite the bullet because in my opinion the more clubs like DW and DU the better for us!

I agree, I don't think it is nor it should be an issue of support one organization and not the other, but there are a lot of people in the delta that are put out with DU and are not contributing at all to any organization. Those same people that quit supporting DU would support Delta Waterfowl, if we had a local chapter, along with the DU members.

It ain't nothin' for me to beat a dead horse ! Both of these organizations are there for the ducks. Everyone who is whining about DU seems to have a "what have you done for me lately?" attitude. Before you throw DU out the window just remember what they HAVE done for the ducks since the thirties. Don't bash DU just because you disagree with something they have done or haven't done. I am a member of both and am currently trying to start a Delta chapter myself. I say support both of them and be glad we have both of them.

Damn water of course !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AMEN TMOORE!! They are both good organizations. I can not give you FACTS on DW but DU FACTS I know by heart. Before you start trashing DU remember NOWHERE is there a organization that has put MILLIONS of $ into Mississippi projects like DU has. In the past 5 years they have put more $ back into Mississippi projects than have been raised in Mississippi totally. If not for the millions pumped into the breeding grounds in the north, where would we be today. Over 80 cents out of every $ raised by DU goes to conservation. They can't please everybody and they make mistakes. Hell I've got POed several times at them and threatened to quit, but then you look at the overall picture. It shouldn't be an issue of DU vs DW. They are not vs each other. They are 2 outstanding organizations. I am not aware of any statement or issue where DU, Inc.(USA) has said they were anti-hunter. Sure they are interested in perserving wetlands, dah, where do you think ducks live or breed besides the Peabody?? I probably know a 100 or so of the 600 employees of DU and everyone of them is an avid duckhunter, not a week-end warrior. DW is a great organization that produces great reasearch, information and great research students.
SUPPORT THEM BOTH DON'T PIT THEM AGAINST EACH OTHER

Sounds as though this topic has been kicked around before on this board. Point made and accepted. Maybe I should have worded the topic differently. I certainly didn't intend on ruffling any feathers. Sorry for bring up an old topic.

Trivia Question:

"NOWHERE is there a organization that has put MILLIONS of $ into Mississippi projects like DU has. In the past 5 years they have put more $ back into Mississippi projects than have been raised in Mississippi totally".

Can you name what projects that millions of dollars was spent on?

Was that all DU's money or was that all money combined from contributing partners? Partner's contributions shouldn't count.

How much money was raised in MS since the beginning of time VS what was spent here in the last 5 yrs. If that is true, does that mean another state is being short changed?

Not trying to dis DU, but trying to stimulate one's thinking process

Looks like everybody is peelin' off their DU duck head and slappin' on a Delta Waterfowl sticker!!!

Or maybe I'll just put it in the middle of the two DU stickers ... probably look cooler that way anyway. Then I'll look like TWICE the "hunter"!!

I sure do hope they come out with a Delta Waterfowl license plate!! hehehe!!!
