Ahhh now I feel dumb for asking..

I see you have a dog..you need to talk to some of these folks about condtions when not to take your dog because some of the people on this board have lost dogs to gators.

Here is some Mississippi lingo"

Suzie- female mallard
woodie, woodrow- wood duck
sky carp, flying carp- snow goose
hoodies- hooded merganser
black mallard (don't hear that one too much anymore)- black duck
sprigs- pintail

Cajun lingo

pool deau- coot
dos gris- scaup (bluebill)

I am sure I left some out..

well boudro...i suppose you're right...3.5 hrs to sit 100 yards from some other yahoo to hunt public land ain't my idea of a good time....

the people at the drive through spoke English, or at least a version of English with a strong accent
remember its not that southerners talk funny...it's the rest of ya'll that talk funny....

here's another hint...southern Calif isn't in the south...had a yahoo from San Diego try to convince me of that once...just remember geography doesn't make it southern....

heck if you get down south of highway 82 give me a shout...i'll be happy to help you out.... but, one warning...i tend to consider folks from Tennessee to be yankee's...so try to be polite

also, if the south hadn't run out of bullets...we'd still be fightin' the "war of northern agression".... oh, yeah, if you refer to the "Civil war" as the "war of northern agression" you'll earn quite a few points with us good ole boys....

some other MS terms....

6 pak - six beers with plastic ring binding for a retainer

12 pak - twice as good as a 6 pack

licker - brown juice in a bottle - preferably with a label that says "Old Charter". Also can be used to describe one's retriever that has a problem keeping it's tounge in it's mouth...

low ride - when you take all four of the above mentioned items (dog included) and slip down the levee road scouting for birds.

Git - what you tell your retriever when he or she starts eating duck guts or wings at the cleaning table.

hunka schit - commonly used to describe 90% of all outboards at the boat ramp or any automatic shotgun the jams in the blind

a-hole - the guy that beat you to your favorite duck hole (could be your best friend or your brother...doesn't matter)

honey hole - the spot that you can start hunting at 8:30 or 9:00 AM after a mean hang over keeps you in the bed until after daylight

juke joint - where raves take place in the delta - stay away unless escorted by Po Monkey Lounger

the man - someone you want on your side

the drink - anything wet that you don't want to fall in with waders on

dog house - my vacation home (used most frequently during duck season)

fat bitch - my dog

fat son of a bitch - my cousin's dog

a "go gitter" - when your dog will not handle and you have to pull cord on the outboard (also as previously mentioned - known as a "hunka schit")..

someone else take over....

Nothing wrong with Olive Branch. Just curious. I myself was a 3rd generation graduate from Olive Branch and my great-great grandfather taught at the school when it was just an agricultural school.

Wow SoftCall looks like I'll need to take some language lessons to be able to get along all right.

bwm, trust me I have live lots of places and there are always positives and negatives about every place. For me the of California outweigh the positives by a landslide. Olive Branch, or Northern Miss. in particular seems like a really nice place to live with really nice people there.

Koz, when I graduated high school, my parents moved us off the Dairy Farm that we lived on inside the city limits to the county. I guess I've just seen it grow so fast. Where we had cows grazing, a developer has since then "row-cropped" houses there. Kinda sad, but I do miss the "small town" that it once was. Like you said, Olive Branch / Northern Mississippi.

Koz,

For what it is worth I do not hunt the public land around Desoto County any more but I did spent over 10 years searching out the finest duck holes, and finding them too. When you get here let me know and I will show them to you. If your leaving California you have to be OK. It is the ones that are moving to California that worry me.
