Why is the last Sunday in Jan. the closing?
I just answered the post on the Bobby Cleveland story, and it brought up a question in my mind that I don't know. Why does the season end on the last Sunday in January? If this trend continues, in 2 seasons we will give up 9 days by taking the 51 day season for the extention past Jan 20, and only get until Jan 25 to hunt. That would be only 5 days past the regular closing of the 20th. Alabama's duck season ends on Jan 31st, so the closing is not Federally Mandated as the last Sunday. Look at this year. IF the sesaon closes on the last Sunday in Jan, that's the 27th, that is 4 days in Jan that we could be hunting and gained the right to hunt by forfeiting 9 total days, but we are not allowed to hunt those days. WHY???

They're looking to get the maximum number of weekend days is my guess.

Its not so much how many days, as to when the days are...The last weekend in January has been consistently poor for me in the North Delta for years...On the other hand, when we have early openers in November WE ALWAYS HAVE BIRDS..We keep saying that it will payoff when we have this, that and the other....but the truth is, that Jan 27-31 has been pretty poor in the North Delta for years...I dont understand why we cant go back to the Nov opener...shut it down for a few weeks, start over early Dec and carry thru til Jan 31...I suppose its cuz all the clubs dont have water in Nov....I dont know..We have water and ducks in November and I would love to have the chance to shoot em !! Just my 2 cents worth !!

Ok, that may be true, with the 51 day season, I can see how that would make sense, open on Dec 8, run straight through with on breaks, and end on Jan 27, for 51 days. However, it would seem that closing the season for 4 days during the week in early to mid december and and therefore allow the last 4 days of Jan to be open would be a reasonable option. But that's just me. If we are going to sacrifice to get them, we ought to tke full advantage of them. And this is all just my opinion, but why not have the season open on Dec 8 and close for 4 days during the week and then reopen on the next weekend. That's the way it use to be, so what would be wrong with going back to that. Maybe its just me.
